Got off my arse last night and found a 9/16 socket in 1/4" drive from the Snap-on site -
TM18, Socket, Shallow, 9/16", 6-Point (http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=all&item_ID=844&group_ID=134&store=&dir=catalog)

They have it in chrome or not, and 6/12 point, etc. The only one currently in stock was chromed at $4 more. Anyway, $17.45 plus postage.

Also available here-

Landrover Propshaft Tool 9/16 (14mm) 1/2 Drive by: Koken - UKtools - Sealey (http://www.uktools.com/landrover-propshaft-tool-14mm-12drive-p-12576.html) - these guys are also on ebay - hope this link will stay current.

Please post here if there's someone in Australia that does the whole thing.

I would have thought that size would be readably available, though perhaps only in a set, but 1/4 drive sets are reasonable priced.

After reading about this in a post a while back, I got my 1/4" 9/16 socket individually from QLD Trade Tools, along with the wobble extension which I think is also necessary. I recall the socket and swivel extension was about $15 all up.

I wish I had got this setup years ago, it makes propshaft removal so much easier/faster and no more rounded nuts/bolts.

What is wrong with using good quality standard 14mm or 9/16th spanners. I use these all the time (series 1s, series 3s, D1s and my 10o1) and have never had any problems.

I posted the UK shop before, 1/2 drive is very overkill, i bought the 3/4" drive. less bulk.

Yep, after spending the other day on replacing my front one AGAIN (because I didn't do it right the first time!) I wish I'd thought of using 1/4" sockets (damn non-mechanic brain!).... ended up using a ring spanner and an open ender which took ages but ratchet ring spanners would be a go I thought!

3/4 drive is huge, I am sure you meant 3/8... :p

Don't think you'd have the clearance for a ratchet spanner.

Thank for that, your link was for ebay. I added the store link so that it won't expire. You're right about 1/2" being overkill.

Anyone ever bought the propshaft removal tool. Which is a 9/16 socket with a built in thin extension?

I bought a 3/8 socket set pretty much just for this job.
However since getting it I find I use it almost exclusively. Perfect size for everything except the really small or really big on the Disco.

100% to Snap-on for speed, 50% for accuracy. I ordered two, one turned up 1/2", and side by side it's a really difficult mistake to make, they are not at all similar.

Called them, all fine, except that they wanted me to return the 1/2" and expected me to pay the return postage. I had to ask before the offered up a courier bag. And of course, no apology, or worry if it was an urgent need...

On to the review -

As you can see from the pics the socket has pretty broad shoulders and you still have to get the prop shaft turned just so to get the socket fully engaged. I don't know if this is the case with the all-in-one tools, but I was hoping for something that would work on all prop shaft nuts in all positions.

On the upside, I doubt there's a chance of splitting the socket at the 1/4" end at its thinnest the wall is 5mm.

That's probably why LR has a special tool to do it.
I've been down the ring spanner route, it was PAINFULLY SLOW:(

So what is the advantage of using these over a pair of 9/16 spanners?

You don't have to take the spanner off every fraction of a turn, lever it between the nut and the yoke every single time.

Yep! :spudnikcurse:

Also, getting that oil seal in is a right pain, if you don't have a hoist and have to lie on your back. I found using the old seal turned around and the hub spanner sitting in the recess makes it a bit easier seating the new seal without damaging it.

Was at South Tweed Trade Tools Direct last night looking at welders [they did not have a good range], and looked for 1/4 drive sockets. Plenty of 9/16 in 3/8 drive but did not see 1/4 drive indivudually, only in sets. The 3/8 drive 9/16 sockets were from $6.50 to $7.50 each. Some deep sockets as well in 3/8 drive 9/16 size. They had 3-4 different brands in their range.

Could also try Coventry fasteners. They have individual sockets, tools, etc in the store across across the road from work at Wacol.

I've found half moon ring spanners to be OK for the job.

Seeing as I seem to have a habit of removing rear propshafts on the track lately, I've just ordered one of these sockets from my local tool bloke.
Not too sure of the brand yet but it's a 6pt & only $8.

I ordered through a tool guy who drops into the workshop each week. A&K Tools I think he is.

It's a 1/4" drive socket, 6 pt. The number stamped on it is 2400A 070 if that's any help.

I can order another through him if you have trouble finding one.
