They've Landed!!!
Driving up Epping Road in Sydney, near the Land Rover Corporate Offices.
Dark Blue, really body wise there is no discernable difference, I first saw it from behind and the thing that caught my eye was that it said 3.0 TDV6 on the back and as I passed it I thought that's odd, and looked in the rear view and saw the Range Rover looking grille and lights, then I dropped back and saw the Discovery 4 badge and noticed the honeycombe in the air intake grille.

There's only 2 in Australia at the moment but if you'd come along to the Expo yesterday, you could have had a really good look at the blue one :).

Does this mean we now need a new Sub-Forum? Or do we need an owner to be part of the community first.... I suppose we won't have to wait too long.:D

D4 test drive by an Aussie in the UK.
I just drove my D3 to a local dealer in the UK and managed to have a D4 test drive on the black-top. Nice.
It has a bit more power which is a little slow to respond but moves the vehicle more rapidly than the D3. The gear changes and the steering have been made even smoother that the D3 (which was very good). It offers a slightly quieter and softer ride too. Ground clearance hasn't changed (they are all air suspension here now). Interior is jazzed up a touch - nothing to get excited about. The top of the range model is pretty swish but out of my range. I'll have to ask my wife to get another job!
I've been lucky enough to have had D3's in Oz since they were first released and have travelled in varying conditions from the Vic High Country to the Qld Hay River Track (nth Simpson). The D3's (and earlier) in standard form have been excellent, and the D4 will be a bit better because of the extra power.
I like a vehicle that is up to the task. I don't mind what it looks like. My recommendation to anyone who wants get into 4WDing remains the same. Get the latest Disco they can afford. A new D4 will offer slightly better reliability and comfort than an older car. But of course ALL vehicles have a degree of unreliability. Just ask the manager at Mt Dare who routinely does the breakdown rescues in the Simpson. He's flat bedded them all and has a story or two. (If you're lucky enough to have a new LR or Toyota etc and unlucky enough that it stops, the warranty should cover remote rescue even in the sticks). Of course this would NEVER happen in a Landy!!! Hooroo...

I hope they remembered to install an engine underneath all those plastic covers.
That looks as if it is only one step away from having the engine bay completely covered and sealed so that you can't see or touch anything.

Second battery is a problem. However there is space in the Oz version where the FBH is.
I am sure drivesafe will find a way to extend the loom for the suff in the battery compartment.

I agree with Caver, and also that was an HSE which is bound to have extra junk under the bonnet compared to an SE.
I actually think the 2.7 D4 may be the smart buy, not the 3.0, and that would have the same under-bonnet config as the D3, or very close to it.

Attached are some pics of a D4 engine bay of the 3.0 I took on Saturday. Not sure if anything was meant to be in the space but a secon battery may fit?

FBH goes there normally. We don't get it in Oz.
Could put the battery there. Either make a bracket or move the stuff out of the spare battery box to there.

D4 engine option? Sorry rmp, but I disagree. Go for the bigger engine - the 3.0lt (244hp/600Nm v's 190hp/440Nm). I've had a crack at it and it's worth it unless you just plan to use it to collect the kids at school - which I'm sure WE don't (I've had D3's since they were released in Oz). More power is always the answer :burnrubber:
Dual battery? I put mine in the 'second battery compartment'. It's a tight fit but perfect for the Optima: YellowTop: OPTIMA Batteries (http://www.optima-batterien.eu/optima-products/yellowtop.html) (I didn't check to see if the D4 'spare battery box' is the same as the D3). The cover went back on and kept everything looking standard. (LR won't honor elec warranty issues after we muck with bits like this)
Compressor? I made a little bracket and mounted my compressor next to the plastic coolant bottles (where the Euro model pre-heater goes)
These turned out to be easy, reliable conversions that required NO new holes drilled!
Wheel/tyre options? Blowed if I know! This topic is bound to get a lot of attention.

I'm not saying the 3.0 isn't a better engine, but the engine isn't the whole buying decision, and while I didn't say, I was considering the perspective of an offroad tourer without an unlimited budget.

In the D4, forget about trying to fit a 2nd battery in the space used in the D3 (it's now full of other "stuff").

Certainly better wheel/tyre options for an offroad tourer with the 2.7, and there are lots of 2.7 D3 owners who are happy enough with the engine. Not having to pay for the leather/7 seat combo and 19" rims reduces the price quite a lot too.

Guys,
That includes all models 2.7, 3.0 & 5.0.
I had a look under all the bonnets today & saw the new ECU located in the ABS/Brake fluid box.
Looks like the only place will now be where the FBH used to be.

...no such thing as a silly question...
The Fuel Burning Heater (FBH) is made by Webasto in Germany and is a small diesel fired combustion chamber with a water jacket around it and it's own fuel and water pump. The water system is plumbed into the engine coolant and hence the car heater.
Normally it fires up automatically when the outside air temperature drops below 10deg ,C (or if the engine coolant temperature drops below a certain level) and it helps warm the cabin and engine up more quickly, although some vehicles will also have an electric heater in parallel with the normal heater - called a Positive Temperature Coefficient heater in the brochures.
Add a remote control or timer and the FBH can be fired up from a key fob plip or pre programmed on the timer to start 20 or 30 minutes before you get into the car to give you a beautifully warm cabin and pre warmed engine.
Absolute heaven on a cold morning if you live in a country with cold seasons and have to leave the car outside. De-ices the windows too. Cool eh!

Thank you for the info.
Very interesting but probably not something that would be used much in Doomadgee. We have been complaining that it's been a bit cool for this time of year, only in the high 30's so far.
Do Australian versions of the D3 or D4 have a FBH?

No Aus versions don't but I suppose you could specify the cold climate pack from the factory.

I was waiting for the D4s to arrive, mostly because the new TDV3 sounds like a great engine, with more power and lower fuel consumption.
But when I found out the pricing, I just couldn't justify the expense vs a second hand D3. And I didn't think they'd done enough with the rest of the car (eg interior) to justify the additional cost.
One other minor thing... from the photos, I actually prefer the D3's less rounded styling. While it's no doubt less aerodynamic and efficient, it's got that Tonka Toy no-nonsense 'built for a specific purpose'thing about it, for what it's worth.
Not that I'm trying to rain on any D4 owners' parade ... it's still a great car, I'm sure. I'll probably trade up to a D4 TDV6 in four years' time or so. I'm just explaining why I didn't go D4 at this time.

I read somewhere (here or on disco3) that basically there was no differences to the rear end.
I had a look today and suspect there is a change to the rear of the rear wheel guards and under quarter panel strip.
This might effect Kaymar type rear bars.....

I've had my D3 for about 3 months now, and I have to say that in general the extra power coming via the 3litre is not really needed, htere asre times when it would be nice to have a 2nd low down turbo just to iron out that first bit of turbo lag, but apart from that the car really goes extremely well.

Since Dec '08... I have to agree, the 2.7 is doing fine except for that initial lag, but then if you drive with it in mind, you hardly notice it...
And I have never noticed it when off road... which is where it really counts :D
lets see my tally now, 4 tojos, 1 pajero, 1 nissan and one bobcat... and all bar the bobcat and 1 tojo have been with H/T tyres on the D3 as well
I had to leave 2 tojos because I didn't have a winch (yet).
