Coming into the warmer weather taking left overs to work to heat up isnt as good. So what sandwich ideas do people have, im not much for the humble salad sanga, but what do people enjoy in a sanwich? I need some ideas, im getting a bit bored with ham and cheese ;D

Im adjusting to the world of shift work and want to eat healthy not end up buying maccas all the time cause its the only thing open.

I always enjoyed a sanga with left over meat from the night before, silverside, roast or even a home made patty. When I did shift I used to often take a meal and throw in the microwave and always washed down with lots of coffee.

Not a bad idea, cold snags would be good. I have been taking left overs and heating them up, but you gotta cook something the night before that is heating up friendly and that actually has left overs.

Have to fight me lad for the left over snags, or roast meat (all varieties) or corned silverside.

Tins of sandwich tuna come in all flavours these days. They can be on their own or with lettuce.

If you like crusty bread rolls then cheese and sliced raw onion is a good one if you like onion.

Then you have all variety of meats in the deli section at the supermarket too.

Limit to a sandwich is your imagination really.

Left over roast Venison with home made chutney isn't too bad. In fact anything with home made chutney isn't bad at all!

a bloke I used to work with used to catch pidgeons and fillet them for meat on his sangas the next day. I never asked and he never bothered to give me a taste and I am pretty happy with how that turned out!

Vietnamese pork roll

aka "the cat dog roll"

I don't know all of the ingredients, reality is I do not want to know what is in the pate, they taste really good with chilli and soy sauce.

There is a really good bakery down the road from Town Hall station that does these to perfection, might be handy to know if you get stationed there

peanut butter, jam, cheese, vegemite 1.0, (in any combination)

as I eat last nights dinner for breaky at 0745am I am amazed at the theory behind a healthy eating shiftworker. After 10yrs of this crap I have yet to see one person who practices what they preach.

Welcome to the dark side....

I give him 3months before he's a ein addict..

choices are Nicotine Protein or Caffeine

take your pick you'll be addicted to at least one

The problem is Ace, if you are doing 12 hour shifts...let's say the ideal roster...2 days (6am to 6pm) followed by 2 nights (6pm to 6am) - on day shift you will probably have a bite for breakfast before you leave...then you may get some mornos...lunch is then bought or brought...then dinner when you get home. Night shift first night - you won't get any sleep during the day...so normal food intake, dinner before you go...hungry sometime after midnight..something bought or brought...go home, fall into bed...toss and turn...then repeat for next night...when that 4 day block is over, take 2 days to readjust, but because of staffing issues, yu are back after only one day off...:D

I hated 12 hour shifts..

Not normally mate - that word that can only be whispered by men in cloaks in darkened halls - "overtime" - is what stops that !!!

They would rather run a car short or a man less in the pit than pay for someone to come in on a day off or extend someone's shift... and they call that good management :bat:

Pesto and cheese or sun-dried tomatoes and cheese, either swiss or parmesan. Also helps if the bread is Italian Pane Di Casa. Takes no time at all to make, and don't need butter, etc.

mate its pretty appealing now, but i have never been much of a fan of maccas and to be honest there isnt much i like. I much prefer KFC but its not open late and buying it on a regular basis becomes expensive.

I hate coffee, so thats off the list, have never smoked and never will so i guess im gunna be a protein addict :D

Im still in my first 6 weeks so dont actually count as a number yet, i am 3 up in the truck for the next 2 weeks, once im off that i will get all the extra shifts no doubt cause a probie is cheaper to pay overtime than a senior officer.

So far my blocks of shifts have been a bit all over the place. My first block was normal, 2 days 2 nights, then i did 1 day and 3 nights and have just finished another block of 1 day and 3 nights, now i am off till the 8th of October, race week

As far as shift work goes i actually dont mind it. I have been having a big dinner before i go and then another meal at around 1am like you said. outside of that time i just take some apples and bananas and snack on those. I bought some museli bars and some K-time bars and some snack sized mars bars and stuff to snack on to stop my buying to much junk food. But i fear as you have said i will fall into the trap and just start buying junk each shift, trying to resist that as much as i can by seeing what sorts of yummy stuff i can take to resist the temptation of saying yes when people ask "do you want anything from maccas":D

Night shift is the killer mate....what I would do - each time you the missus makes a batch of spaghetti bolognese...make extra, freeze some, and take that...also, those pre-perpared salad kits from Coles are easy, cheap and quick to prepare...add some fruit with that and it will keep you off the junk...for a while at least...those coooold winter nights in Lithgow...everyone's eating burgers and fries and you're eating lettuce...:Rolling::Rolling:

yeah, thats it. I have been doing that, but you get sick of spag bol after a week or so, just trying to add a few more things. Fortunately im stationed in bathurst so the weather isnt as cool, but not far off.

Burgers and stuff dont so much get me when everyone else gets some and i dont, but the smell of KFC drives me crazy :D

I don't use them but have been told that half way through your shift go and get a protein and glycerol thick shake, most health stores or gym's have them. Apparently they are hard to digest initially but as time goes by you get to enjoy the taste. They smell ordinary and look like porridge.

There is a laymans term for it but I cannot remember it.

Pretty well anything goes if it is on bread from our breadmaker.
Wifey knocks up various types of flour mixtures with rolled oats, seeds, chilli powder, malt etc.
Commercial breads taste nothing like the home made loaf.

no, you are right. I used to have a bread maker but i was making the mixes and we would never eat enough and it would go to waste.

Now we have the young bloke we go through quite a bit of bread so might be worth looking into getting another one.

Hi,
let the bread cool, and cut it with an electric knife, place same size pieces of wax paper between the slices and put the 'sliced' loaf into the freezer in a plastic bag. (easy to separate the slices this way)

Or

freeze the whole loaf (in a plastic bag) till nearly solid, then cut it with a substantial sharp knife.
You can get very fine slices this way - goes further and is better for the waistline.

I get a week's lunches from a loaf, along with the odd crust (fresh from the freezer - just microwave defrost) with home made soup, or eggs on toast etc for a light evening meal or weekend snack.

cheers

Do you want sandwiches yuu can just quickly whip up, or are you prepared to put in some serious effort !?

If the later I have made a couple of "pressed sandwiches" that are excellent - especially for picnics - but would be great and do you a couple or three meals on shift work !

A few suggestions from a "short term" shift worker! (well 15 years is not that long really)
a. Make spag bol and stir fry's( start with kan-tong satay , sweet n sour etc and move on to more complex stuff) with 3-500 grams extra beef/chook/pork (+ some crushed garlic in all to enhance smell/ flavour next day:D) so left overs for main next day. Also put 1-200 ml water in the jar after you have tipped out the sauce onto stirfry/spag , shake(put lid back on of course) and pour on top, this will give you extra sauce at the end to soak into your rice/ pasta
b. For winter BEG borrow or steal a slow cooker to make stew's , corned beef, lamb shanks etc ANYTHING done in a slow cooker tastes even better reheated in 2 days ( again add extra as these can last several days or be frozen for future shifts) You or your partner can put the slow cooker on low in the morning around 6-10am and it will be ready when you wake after 8hrs cooking.

One thing If you want to sleep well during the day try not to eat after midnight or only have a very light snack, I have found this to work well for me.

Pigeon tastes a lot like venison actually!!! Both are a very dark meat. However I have only eaten the farmed variety... ;)

I don't eat sandwiched often, but usually they are made with whatever leftovers are handy. But it is hard to go past a good steak and salad sandwich...

My better half likes pineapple sandwiches - however you need to keep the bread and the pineapple separate until just before you eat it.
