Straining Noise from Puma Transmission ... opinions please

Only just done 5000km in my 130 Puma and the transmission is starting to make weird sort of straining sounds (and associated slight vibrations) under the following conditions:

- 6th gear
- under power ~2000rpm and up, ie. when accelerting or going up a hill

Initially I only noticed it going up hills, but now it's doing it under acceleration too. Actual power output doesn't seem to be affected, and the sounds pretty much disappear when I lift back off the accelerator.

It's not a major noise, but odd compared to the otherwise really smooth running of the Puma. Any ideas? Anything I need to worry about sooner rather than later? I'm currently on a camping trip (in the Brisbane area for the next few days) and still 2000km from home base.

Personally i would be heading to the nearest dealer to get it checked. Either in BNE or Lyntons in Southport (Goldcoast).

There have been a few driveline issues I believe.

Clutch or transfer or rear diff.

My clutch started its rattle at about 5000km and was replaced at 8000km so if it is the clutch more than likely it will get you back home ok.

I have heard that the transfer case has been appearing as an issue.

Rear diffs are also known to be patchy.

Best take it to a LR service outlet for an opinion.

Thanks guys, I've now done another couple of hundred ks into Brisbane itself, and I'm staring to think it's the clutch too, the sounds certainly seem to come from that general direction. I'll see if I can get Austral to have a look at it next week. And if nothing else they can update the ECU firmware.

Well the truck spent the day down at the workshop. Verdict: 5th/6th gear synchro hubs are wearing. Apparently there's a service bulletin out for this. Here's the bummer: apparently no spares in country :(

Thanks Scott. I'm aware there's a fix, just that there are no parts in the country. I was told 2-3 weeks. Luckily it's still drivable, so I'll be heading back to Sydney over the weekend, and you'll be seeing the truck in your shop when those parts arrive.
