Hi All

Further to the last trip (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/series-2-2a/89024-corner-capers.html) this thread is on a little gearbox trouble I'm now having.

About 1/2 way through the trip after having trundled along some rugged tracks, 2nd gear seemed to give up :(

Up until then its always been a little odd, when selecting it the shifter travel always seems to be less for the other gears. Often it would get 1/2 way then feel like it would stop on a notch. You would then have to go a little further to get it all the way in so it would engage.

Now it mostly refuses to select at all, feeling like it stops on that 'first notch' as above and won't go further.

If you do get it in, it will jump out straight away or after just few meters of driving.

fox.in.oz has already posted "First of all check that the 2nd gear stop hasn't wound out or has something foreign between it and the selector shaft. There should be a 0.002" or 0.05mm clearance when 2nd gear is selected and located by it's detent."

which gives something to start with.

Considering the dust that got in almost every orrifice, "something foreign" could be a bit of good Aussie red earth.

Failing that, I guess I am looking at pulling the gearbox out?

I don't know if I would want to have a crack at fixing the gerbox myself if thats the case and might have to look at taking it to someone.

I know there is no set price, but what do people typically expect a gearbox reco to cost? (I'm in Melbourne).

Of course if I pull it out, then I'd also want to replace the rear main bearing seal which is leaking.

Of course new clutch plates might be the go since the box is out :)

And I'm sure I could think of a bunch of other things :)
