Hello Folks,
I've joined the club! I've just, this morning, bought this lovely 1956 88 inch Series 1!
http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/5641/matildaa.jpg (http://img8.imageshack.us/i/matildaa.jpg/)
I pick her up on Sunday. It has new seats and wiring, chassis rust free. Very minor firewall rust. She's currently club registered, so I'll be bringing her home on a trailer.
It is 100% original. 2 litre Petrol engine.
Once I have her, I'll post up some extra pics. We have christened her "Matilda". :)

Thanks guys - the plans for Matilda are to take her in sickness, and in health, to love and cherish her, for the remainder of our natural lives.
And on top of that, we will get her road registered and use her as a once per week fun mobile. :)

Thank you to everyone for your well wishes. We will have a party to Christen Matilda very soon - and you are all invited. :) And it's grand to be a member of the elite - the Series owner's club! :D
You know, the day I got Grover is a day I will never forget. When that brand new machine rolled into the Austral showroom, I actually went weak at the knees! (I know that is slightly tragic).
But my elation at getting this charming Series 1 is every bit the equal of that feeling - if not better. To now own one of the first of the finest (Series 1), along with one of the last of the finest (Puma Defender), is just a wonderful thing for me. I will look after this grand old lady till the day I die, I promise.
But I'm also very excited about being a member of that special club which is the Series chapter. :)
PS - Glen - the plastic Jap rice burner will be sitting out - until I extend the shed!

Just to egg him on further... here is the personalised number plate I think Scallops should get for Matilda...

Nothing beats original look black & white plates on a classic, and this combination is available.

Thanks Solmanic - I appreciate the diversion - Kat Woman will now be spending half her time hunting you down with the kitchen knife rather than me! :p
(Actually, she is very pleased with Matilda)

October, I'm flying - Christmas - let us see. :) It was a bit of a punt buying her unseen but I am thinking if anything needs doing, I'm old enough to learn.
PS - I could fit everyone in the back of Matilda though (airport ferry)

1st October 2009, 04:33 PM
Well, we plan to go for drives in the sweet Queensland sun in her - regularly! :) The vehicle is pretty much right from what the seller has told me, just hasn't been driven for a while, so a bit of TLC and she'll be ready to go.

On the plates, you can't have 56LND,56LRO or LND56 as I have them, but LRO56 is available OR there is a special 7 letter prestige special on at the moment that will fit MATILDA.

Thanks again, folks. I was quite overwhelmed last night at the GCLRO meeting. zulu Delta (Glen) presented both Kat Woman and I with t-shirts - these have a piccy of Matilda on them, with, "Guess what I own" written above it! :D
Well, I'm wearing mine to work today!
It didn't end there though - later in the evening, Hodgo came over for a chat and has given me an original Land Rover service manual for the 1956 Series 1! I was very humbled by these lovely gestures, and if this is any indication as to life as a Series 1 owner, I know I am going to enjoy it. :)
Thanks you all again for your well wishes.

Hello again Folks,
Well, Series life is suddenly very interesting and I haven't even picked Matilda up yet! I found a website which deciphors the chassis number....
Land Rover FAQ - History, Production, Sales - Chassis Numbering (http://www.lrfaq.org/FAQ.3.Chassis_Numbers.html)
My chassis is 57662061
So the revelation hits me - it's not a '56 88. It's a 1955 (5), Land Rover (7), 86 inch (6), late 1955 RHD export knock down (6), serial number 2061.
Am I right?
PS - This does look like it!

Near the end of the run.
5 1955
7 series 1
6 86" Basic CKD
6 Export RHD
2061 0f 2250
Told you you didn't need that extra 2 inches:D
Just over 1000 older than mine. It was delivered 5/5/55 so yours should have been towards the end of the year, hence why the owner might of thought it was a '56.

Heya Tim - yeah - got home fairly late with Matilda - I love her, and will post up some pics of her trip home soon. I think the large dose of "originality" that she came with surprised Kat Woman a little - I think she is maybe a little disappointed, but I'm hoping the vehicle will prove to be something she will enjoy as much as I - once I get stuck into a few cosmetic bits and pieces.
I've had a fairly good look at her now, and she is in what I reckon is pretty good nick. The vehicle is rust free apart from some minor rust in the upper firewall - easy to get to, and I don't expect it will be too hard to sort out. It was as the seller described her to me at any rate.
I drove her around the seller's block and it was great fun - even managed to double declutch without mashing anything. :D
