Can anyone tell me where I can get a decent can opener.
I am sick of the cheapies that after a few cans they start to slip and don't spin the can.
I don't want one that cuts around the side of the can but one that cuts the top.
I want one that will last more than a few months. I would consider electric if it works but prefer manual.
I am interested in hearing stories on manual or electric ones.
Dave.

I have used P-38 can openers for many years now:
P-38 can opener - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P-38_can_opener)
They only cost a couple of cents at a military disposal stores and ALWAYS work.

Openers like these cut around the top lip, leaving a lid with a smooth edge, and sides with a clean edge around the top. They are sold as safety openers.
We have a Tupperware one and it has been great.
Buy Kuhn Rikon Kitchenware (http://www.everten.com.au/product/kuhn-rikon-auto-safety-can-opener-blue.html)

Gotta love the FRED. Even when completely rusted they still seem to work.

One of the REMLR brown jobs may be able to sell you an AIF can opener Mk.1. Don't carry it around in public.

We've got a Swingaway brand one manual one - made in USA. Pretty sure I got it at Coles, dont recall the price.

From memory it was marketed as "as used on the space shuttle" to which I thought - yeah whatever - but its turned out to be great.
Occasionally I get the odd can that has a really deep rim or a bit of damage that you have to nurture a bit, but other than that its easy.
We've had it at least 3 years and its still going well.
Prior to that - many years of frustrating junk ones so I know how you feel.
As an aside - I don't ever recall mum buying a new can opener when I was growing up, we only had 2 of them, one in the house and one in the caravan, and the ones I used at my grandparents place always opened cans without a problem, even though they looked like they were ancient.
They were only simple ones like this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/8d/Butterfly%26churchkey.jpg/180px-Butterfly%26churchkey.jpg
but they never seemed to wear out or give any trouble.
Is it just junk manufacturing and materials that make the modern ones fail?

My BiL is mildly obsessed and gave me one of these-
Normann Copenhagen Butterfly - Can Opener at Velocity Art And Design (http://www.velocityartanddesign.com/butterfly-can-opener-pr-19640.html)
Works a treat, and great if you're a bit stiff in the joints, according to my father - everyone got one last Christmas.

Type "Ratchet Can Opener" into google.
I bought one of these things from "House" or one of the kitchen supply places, and they're brilliant. The opener locks onto the can - you don't have to squeeze the handles together to keep it engaged - there is a release button to unlock after you have finished opening the can.
Opening / cutting is achieved simply by pushing the short handle back and forward, using a ratchet drive.
Best can opener I've ever come across, and they're cheap.

Only about 18 months. Bought it when I started in this job and rented a flat in Fremantle. The one supplied in the flat was one of those horrible things with the butterfly handles that never seem to work when you want them to.

BMKal,
18 months sounds good to me.
Where do I get one. I went to order one from the site I posted earlier and it is a USA site.
Dave.
