Another quesiton if I may...
Tomtom or Garmin for satnav?????
I dont need bluetooth or anything like that (the Landy already has a Parrot unit in it). It does need to be easy to use though for me & Ellie.
We have both used TomTom's before wonder what the new Garmins are like.
Thanks
Jon

I can only comment on the Tom Toms....I have a GO 920 or something like that...came with world maps which was great when I was OS...bottom line..love it..not one hiccup. Price wise, go here...they will be better priced than the major retail chains...

We have Garmins in our work vans, never ever had any probs, find them easy to use.I have an old one in my van,a510 something & it goes with me on holidays, shooting trips, etc,no probs at all.Even a couple of dusty cape trips hasnt effected it.If it wasnt simple to use i wouldnt be able to use it.
We had a couple of Meio's for a while, they didnt last long,as for any other brand, dunno,as we have only used the Garmin's.
Those Parrots are also excellent,we have them & have never ever any probs, although they suit some brands of mobiles better than others.

i have a tomtom running on a PDA and have had no issues at all.
Only thing with most of the out of the box GPS is the maps once you go off a gazzetted road your stuffed.
Saying that I think the top end tomtom's better and can be used offroead and at sea.

I borrowed a TomTom the other day, and found it excellent. I asked for one for father's day but got a Navigon, it is similar but has a lot more features that I don't need and is more difficult to use, also the bracket is for a sloping windscreen, not a Defender, so sits at an awkward angle. I found the Tom Tom easy to use (I had never used one before) and wish I had got one earlier.

Funny no one has reported any problems with either product. I have used both, each got me to where I wanted to go, but the Tom Tom zig-zagged instead of taking me the most direct way. Both were straight forward to use, I don't know what models they were.

Just a note, the factoty fit sat-nav in the Jag tried to get me to do the whole journey again because I went into the Apartment complex my mate lives at by another entrance which is about 200 yrds from the one it wanted me to use !

hmm, garmin all the way for me.
shonkytopo and tracks4oz are but just 2 reasons.
but heres the clincher. all you tom tom owners, try and find "Mooney St, Telegraph Point" wont show up. use garmin to search all addresses and it will list Mooney St at "Manning" which is a region, not a suburb. the maps are not 100% correct and thats where the error is ,but thh garmin deals with that better than Tom Tom. Mooney st runs parralel to the Pacific Highway, so anyone who has driven north past Port Macquarie will have seen it, so not as if it is in an out of the way area. i can list plenty of streets that you wont find in a Tom tom for the same reason.
no5 Rollands Plains Road is listed as in Manning
no60 Rollands Plains Road is listed in Telegraph Point
no84 Rollands Plains Road is back to Manning
please note, the gps is only as good as the maps, and the maps in aus aren't good.

If you're using it for off-road purposes then it's a no-brainer. Garmin everytime. You get access to open source software as Rosscoe mentioned that's just not able to be used with the Tom Tom.
The Garmin Topo maps are also said to be ok for bush use, but I haven't used them and have found that Shonky Maps do the job nicely (so far).
If all you're needing a gps unit for is the everyday commuting, no doubt a Tom Tom will meet your needs. All brands have minor map issues hear and there in the 'burbs.
Check out the GPS Australia forum for lots of info.

After reading the thread through again, am I right in thinking that I can upload Shonky maps to the Nuvi's?
Im thinking that that would be a plus point when we leave the city for weekend trips away.
That being the case Im looking at the Nuvi1350.
Thx

yes shonky maps are uploadable to garmin and are free
nuf said methinks :)
p.s. garmin have just released there own topo maps that are apparently based on the hema 4wd maps for aus for around $250, that might be worth a look as well

Re test:
Yes it does exist, I was hoping one of the units would have found it.
May be try Table Cape instead of Wynyard.

problem is, it doesnt exist on whereis maps, and since most gps use data from whereis these days ( yes a few don't i know) most of the gps on the market wont find it and many other addresses like it. not a fault of the gps, but of the data maps supplied to them from sensis/whereis.
just rechecked my garmin maps on that , and that street you listed is shown as tollymore road on garmin 2009/ but it also shows tollymore further up and that can't be right, sooo.....
