View Full Version : Where are all the coloured defenders ?

I'm thinking about a second hand TD5 Defender with a budget of about 30 grand.

Where are all the coloured Defenders for sale ? Even scarcer for a 130

Most of the ones for sale are white and boring. I would hate to be confused with a Toyo or Patrol.

What was the range of colours available? I'm partial to the yellow.

White is by far the most practical. I wouldn't have any other colour. Remember that Defender aircon is not that great. The dark coloured ones heat up quickly and the aircon struggles to make a difference. White doesn't show scratches.

i doubt anyone will mistake your defender for a japper;)

if you wait long enough something other than white will pop up

As Wally says, white is by far the most practical colour in Australia, and the Defender is preeminently a practical vehicle. Any colour other than white will increase the interior temperature and/or the fuel used to run the aircon, and statistically increases the probability of an accident more than any other vehicle related factor.

So it is not surprising that most Defenders are white, particularly 130s, as these are bought for practical reasons to an even greater extent than the 110.

I'll have to disagree on white being cool and not showing scratches. Also the red dirt up here stains the paint and is particularly noticeable on white vehicles (as they take on a pink tinge). The best colour is very shiny silver. It reflects the heat, doesn't show the scratches and hides the dirt far better than white.

Now as for you colour choices. I'd agree with what's been said and also add that I have seen a couple of yellow ones but it would have to be about the least common colour brought in to Australia.

The reason that I need something other than white is that my both my daughter and son are visually impaired and something other than white makes it a lot easier to find in a car park.
The shape is similar to the Toyo and Patrol for the visually impaired. ( I know having owned both and had a lost child trying to find a white patrol in a sea of white fourbys)

Other bright colours are preferred, you should see my colour range of shirts.

You have to adjust to the needs of others.

That is the perfect excuse to paint it any colour you want.

How about getting a white one and painting a big smily on the bonnet and doors :D

I know when I ordered mine (1998) there was a fair wait for any colour other than white, when the Numpties ordered their grey one I think there was a 4 month ? wait as it had to be ordered into the country.

Interestingly when we ordered the mazda 3 for the wife white was a special order and we had to wait for it to come from Japan. Mind you it meant we had a 03/07 compliance plate, and 02/07 manufactured date.

I disagree with the theory that white stays cooler...we never turn our aircon on we open the front flaps and if more air is needed the windows down and the back window open:D and we do travel regularly all over Aust;)

BTW there were 3 Red 130's at the Sydney Expo...our's, Mark's and the third I don't know it it was an ex CFA also:)

It is not theory - it is fact. But of course with air flowing through as you suggest there is little heat gain through the roof and sides - but when parked and locked.........

As far as heat gain goes, the roof is by far the most important, which is why Landrovers until recently almost always had a white (or close to) roof even if the rest is a different colour.

why not just remove the headlining and install some heat and sound insulation?

I did this on my old Oslo Blue MY02 D110 and it worked a treat - lowered the in cab temps and made the acoustics much better.

just my 10c worth.

When we bought ours we were offered a new one one in "Tempest Yellow". We ended up getting a demonstrator (1994 TD5 110) in British Racing(!?) Green, which looks good, but does get hot in the summer.

The yellow one was bought by a friend of ours, and it looks terrific!

Cheers,

Lionel

Yes, this is one of the major advantages of the Defender, lost with the latest model.

I ordered a santorini black one in August, it does not arrive into Brisbane until the 2nd of November, and delivery is around the 14th seemingly, not holding my breath though. Could have got white straight away but wanted black, not too worried about the temp difference, had black cars for years and is just my preference in colour. Wish it was here though!!

Wish they had put some kind of tracker on the ship so I could watch it cross the oceans...:)

I reckon that has to be the best bit about buying a defender.....is the anticipation of it being delivered.:D

G'Day All,

My 110 is "Tempest Yellow".

I bought the Yellow Peril from a guy in Canberra about two months ago. I must admit that I was a bit dubious about the colour but reasoned that at the end of the day what mattered more than the colour was getting back into being a Defender owner.

Since bringing Peril home, I've had a lot of good humoured admiring (surprise, surprise) comment and ribbing. All good fun.

Some think it's not "manly" or "cool" to have a yellow 4WD but they're entitled to their opinion ..... if they need to restrict their colour choice to feel comfortable then that doesn't concern me.

My grandkids love it and call it the "School Bus" as it reminds them of the yellow school buses they see in American movies. Even my three year old granddaughter recognises it from a distance.

As to practicality, it doesn't get really hot when left out in the sun due to its light colour and it doesn't show the dirt (you could only see the deposits of the recent dust storm once you got up close!) ...

... AND it's impossible to lose it in a car park ... a huge advantage !!!

Yellow rules !! :)
