Wonder if anyone has experienced the same as I did today - driving back to Perth from Kalgoorlie and when pulling up to stop, there's a very definite clunk clunk clunk just as we come to a stop. Managed to recreated it a few times and it sounds like it's coming from the transfer box. Quick inspection underneath didn't reveal anything, except (sightly worryingly) evidence of oil above the rear diff...
Noticed, at the same time, that there appears to be more than the usual amount of slack in the transmission when changing gear.
Characteristics are - long run, hot engine and transmission - almost not there when cold - no other major symptoms - bombs along just fine otherwise.
Any ideas anyone before I head down to our friendly LR dealer?

If it seems to be coming from the transfer case, my money's on a tight handbrake (shoes dragging).

Hi,nice unit you have, this won't help you,but a search on the web have shown that transmissions have failed, rear diffs have been reshimed, engines have been replaced.Have not found/heard about transfer units failing.Hand brake shoes that have been adjusted overtight cannot be good for the transfer gears or your gearbox, please keep everyone informed about what the noise turns out to be.Keep a log book of noises ,when they happen, where etc as this can be usefull when trying to get somthing fixed under warrenty.

Thanks for the responses - I'll take it down to Southern tomorrow and see what they say. I'll be sure to let you know the outcome.
I can imagine an over-tightened handbrake may be the culprit (it had a service about 3 weeks ago), and how it only happens when it's hot - not too sure I can quite see how that would make the transmission seem to have excessive 'slack' but we'll see what happens.
Cheers

The symptom that you described (... clunk clunk just as we come to a stop.) is exactly what happens when the handbrake shoes are adjusted to tight.

Thanks everyone - very useful and I'll mention it to the dealer when it goes in on Monday. It's been fine during the week on Metropolitan driving, so it has to be related to long distance travelling and heat. I'll let you know what they say.
