View Full Version : Cruise Control Problems

Since I have had this car (2002 V8 D2) I have noticed that the cruise control tends to cycle by about 3kph. This causes the car to continually surge then slow down then surge again even on a flat road. Has anyone else experienced this.

Same here.
When questioned a Landy specialist mechanic about it he said assuming all vacume hoses are OK then the tension on the cable at the throttle body can have some bearing on things like this but I have not tried adjusting things myself to see what effect it has.

I have a td5 not V8 however my cruise control was all over the place it could not hold a constant speed. I cleaned the MAF sensor which was very dirty and that sorted the problem out. I assume that the cruise was struggling to drive the car like i was because the car was unpredictable.

Hi all,
I had the same problem in my 2003 D2 V8. The vehicle would surge on cruise, even when on the flat.
It felt like the cruise computer was over compensating on throttle, overspeeding then throttling back too far so you were forever going above and below your target speed. Pretty unpleasant for passengers as well.
The fix seems to be directly related to the amount of slack in the cruise cable (check the throttle cable as well).
Can't remember the factory spec for this play but it is minimal (other's can maybe look it up as my Rave CD has stopped working).
I adjusted the slack in both cables and the surge is now gone.
Hope this helps.

Got the Rave disc working.
You adjust the throttle cable first with zero lash whilst ensure that the throttle still closes fully.
Then adjust the cruise cable so that the stop has a gap of between 0.5mm and 1.5mm.
5 minute job at most.

Thanks Andrew,
I checked the accelerator and cruise control cables, and both were very loose - probably streched with wear.
All now correctly adjusted. Quick and easy job!:)
I'll find out how well the cruise control works on the way to work tomorrow.
Thanks again,
Alan

Took the cruise control through its paces this morning and its perfect on the flat road - no variation in speed at all.:)
I found the instructions on rave (that Zippythewonderkid referred to below) to be so simple, even I could follow them.
Cheers,
Alan.
PS Maybe I should have checked Rave a bit closer before posting this thread, but there's so much info in there!

This was very useful post as I adjusted mine on the weekend and made a hell of a difference - all good !! The cruise actually works now without the surging !

About to go and have a stab myself, same issues with the cruise, tend to find mine will be set then tail off, like it isn't holding. See if this works but from memory, I think both my throttle and cruise cables are quite slack.

On my 03 td5 auto D2, the cruise has decided not to work. The button on the dash comes on but it wont set when you pull back the leaver on the steering. Anyone had this happen before?

Mine had the same probelem a while back, all fixed for a $2 piece of hose from Supercheap as it will almost certainly be a slight crack in the rubber vacuum hose from the diaphragm to the cruise control cable. I'll post a link showing where.

Awesome! Thanks mate. Fixed mine today.
Less than 2 minutes (pipes came off and went on dead easy)
Got a piece of pipe from my local Auto1 who just so happened to have an off cut length on the bench.
Cost - nothing, zilch, nada, no cents, $0.00....!!
Cheapest fix I'll ever do on the Disco!
Cruise now works a dream.
Thanks for the invaluable help....again.

Start with the basics...
Auto or manual?
Do your brake lights work properly?
Have you had your steering wheel off for any reason?
We'll go from there once you answer :D

I have jsut noticed after rereading this post that the light on the dash does not come on, the light on the switch does but not on the dash.
Is it posible to turn it off with a computer program for the TD5 as it did not work after they reprogramed the ABS sensors?

Tombie2,
Auto and yes the brake lights don't work. So im guessing its the brake pedal switch cos my steering whell hasn't been off since I have had it.

Follow the throttle cable from the throttle housing back towards the drivers side and look for a rubber diaphragm.

isn't the hose issue with the v8, the TD5 is all ecu controlled

I seem to be having the same problem with the new replacement D2a td5 auto, brake lights work, fuse replaced, cruise switch light comes on when pressed but hit the engage switch and nothing happens. The previous d2 worked perfectly, no surging or problems with speed so this one has me scratching my head. Anyone got ideas? Anyone heard of the switch going on the blink?

I have noticed that a wire between my firewall and cabin has been severed, a broken green wire that goes to the brake pedel, I think that if I fix it all cruise probs will be good. It looks like someone has poked another wire through the firewall with a screw driver and put the screw driver through the wire:mad:
