Hi Guys
I'm moving house on the 19th of Oct and I'm looking to hire a truck on the Sat morning to pre pack ready to move out on the Monday...
I'm finding it hard to find stuff.....I have been to the major hire companies and found one at europcar although it doesn't really say its length of capacity.
and one at budget which is a light commercial (Isuzu moving van) 4.2m long. We don't have a great deal of furniture to move. a lounge, a plasma + unit.. fridge with the double doors couple of book shelve units 2 queen size beds and a small 2 seater sofa bed..and some tall speakers from the surround sound.....oh and washing machine and dryer.
The rest is like all the crap from the shed!! do you think one of these Vans would be big enough? I have no idea what they are like in size.
Also is there any companies that I may have missed...I have been to all the major ones like avis etc they either dont have what I want or are really really expensive compared to the other 2 that I have found.
any help and advice would be appreciated:).....I'm selling, buying and moving on the same day! so it all has to be moved and no we can't move anything in early we have already asked that.:(

Lou, give Able Hire - Able Hire | Trucks (http://www.ablehire.net.au/?p=89-Trucks)
They have different sized pantechs that you don't need anything other than a normal licence for...
** I have no connection with Able Hire in any way, shape or form...have used them before to hire gear and they are good guys..

Avis, Hertz, Thrifty, Network Rentals all do trucks DB. consider getting one with a "tail-loader". it will save some back work when shifting the fridge. The standard 2 tonne Pantechs should move all the stuff you mentioned in 1 load (Garage ??) and can be driven on a car licence.

and most already come with a hyraulic lifter...one of the first things I looked at as I dont see how we are going to get a roller cab in one with out it:D..unless we drag it on its roller wheels behind the truck:twisted:

Dullbird,
When I last moved I hired a self storage unit near to where I was moving(about 200km move)
I then borrowed a mates enclosed trailer(you could hire one) and moved stuff that I did not have a daily need for.
I then left the essentials for the day I moved.
We even lived out of the 40l engle for a week.
Dave.

We already have a storage unit hired with stuff in it in sydney....at the moment there is not one close to where we are moving and if there was, being at work we just do not have the time to do and hour trip and back after work hours to move anything.....

We hired a truck from Thrifty when we did the final clear out of our old Sydney house.
We moved 300kms so I doubt the mileage would be a such a problem for you! The deal includes a certain number of Kms, and you pay a bit more if you go over. It wasn't unreasonable, even though we were waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over. ;)

I've used Hertz and Eurocar in the past.. I think they're a 3 tonner.. no way you can fit a whole house full of gear into one, but it's still more convenient than using a furniture trailer as you make a lot less trips. I think they typically allow 100km per day.
Have you priced Balmain Rentals Pty Ltd (Annandale,NSW) (http://balmainrentals.rtrk.com.au) ? I've never used them but see their vehicles around the place.

That was 300km between houses. We still had the return trip, and we had to pick the truck up from another suburb!
Total mileage was pushing 650kms. ;)
It didn't cost us more than $450 so I don't know where you are getting your figure of 1k from! We had the truck overnight too!

There is a 3 tonne truck at Blakehurst for $117 per day with 100kms free. Additional Ks at 25c each. $25 per 100kms - my falcon uses more than that in fuel, and its mine!
and this is the fancy model with aircon!
I would be very surprised if you had to do two trips. Between your three trucks, my patrol and trailer and anyone else helping out you will probably have a surplus of space!

Halfway between the airport and your place. ;) Alternatively there is one at Mascot (right next to the airport) for the same price. ;)
I did offer my help, and was willing to take a flex day (time in lieu).
Anyway its up to you guys. You asked for ideas - thats just mine. :) You might find a better deal, or maybe not. :)

ok so I have just done a thrifty.....pick up from blakehurst..
from the 16/17 to the 19 and it has come up with $750...think its more like 790 with the fees
https://www.thrifty.com.au/book/step3.aspx'sid=v4u1rz55an4l5hevtshlpv552341209
so perhaps you want to enlighten me shonky and tell me how I get the $117 dollar rate.
What am I doing wrong?
Thats for the 3 ton van buy the way
if I had to hazzard a guess I would say that the times you are putting in make it cheaper.....but are probably times that more than likely do not work for us

Balmain Truck Rentals - http://balmainrentals.rtrk.com.au/'scid=2144&kw=254285:159056 They're just off the City-West Link.
I used to rent trucks with tailgate loaders from Ranger in Lidcombe, but I think they changed name to Hertz or something. They were also for MR licence.

Thanks Simon......
Might give them a call however if there is any saving to be had there I'm not sure it would be worth the extra 40 mins on top to return the van after we spent the day unpacking

Some won't let you take them out of the metropolitan area. Others charge more if you do. A mate wanted to hire a truck from the airport to Richmond. Nope. Too far.
I made the mistake of telling one mob I wanted to take a trayback ute to Newcastle. That cost me a lot more. In the end I could have hired a car, with no restrictions for less, and fitted what I needed into the boot.

Some won't let you take them out of the metropolitan area. Others charge more if you do. Good point Ron. Speaking from my experience when I worked for Kennards, just tell them you're going to Camden or Campbelltown, otherwise they might hit you up for a few $$ as Ron says.
Also, make sure there's a spare wheel, brace & jack in the truck. Some companies have them but some only fit them if travelling outside metro (like Kennards used to). If it's not & they want $ to do so, kick up a stink about safety concerns about leaving all your worldly possessions by the side of the road waiting for a spare wheel.
Check the vehicle thoroughly for any damage & make sure it's all noted down (just like at that LR dealer you go to). Refuel it before you return it too or else you'll cop fuel at up to 50cpl over what's in the street (make sure it's full when you pick it up too).
If you're getting a pantech, watch out for low branches - the insurance often doesn't cover overhead damage.

when we did some quick sums...laim we thought it was cheaper to do it our selves and hire a Van...
Dobbo being the good bloke that he is has offered to help, and after reading shonky's post looks like he offered too although I was unaware of that....
We need to try and keep the cost down as much as we can, as we have some massive expenses to fork out once we get in...:(

hey Mick......rang these people, they wont let us pic the truck up any time other than first thing in the morning even though they are open 7 till 7:eek: go figure.
Anyway it looks like we might go with possibly budget as there prices seem reasonably competitive..and Ian can pick it up at the airport. and if need be we can drop it off at a different location.
