Slipping fan belt?? replaced by rep. mechanic guess what---still slipping and squeeling when accelerating OK at low revs but quite bad when I put the foot down. What next? New tensioner? New pullies bearings?? Has anyone been through this, prefer to learn from someone elses experience generally a lot easier and cheeper. By the way 02 D2 TD5 A/C only.

in the old days we would just hold a cake of soap on the fan belt as the motor was just ticking over and it worked just hold the soap on until the squealing stoped

My 300TDI'S belt does it especially after I wash the motor down.Buy some dry lube in a stick apply it to the belt it stops it.

It probably isn't slipping. They have a habit of squealing, especially after the engine is washed.

You can check to see if it is the belt making the noise by spraying water on it while it is running.

Everyone has his or her own pet method of stopping the squealing. The one that works for me is talcum powder.

My guess the noise is the bearing in the tensioner or idler pulley partly siezing. The tensioner bearing seems to only last about as long as a belt.

A leaking exhaust gasket on a TD5 can sound remarkably like a slipping belt....

Does it change or temporarily go away if you spray something on the belts?

Almost certainly a leaking exhaust manifold gasket/ broken studs, is it worse cold? And especially under load?

Here I was containing my thoughts to the belt, but I'm sure JC has hit the nail on the head.

Just in case anyone has the same problem-----EXHAUST MANIFOLD GASKET---check retaining bolts, use a torch, heads snapped off. So I replaced:
fanbelt
Tensioner
pully bearings
exhaust manifold gasket
shaved[refaced] ex. manifold
plus labour
UNDER $800
Thank someone for fair and honest mechanics
