I had the Defender (2007) into Southside LR (Brisbane) for warranty replacement of the Clutch and front prop shaft this week. They also had it tagged for the software patch. I also told them about 2 engine rattle episodes at cold morning start, in the last month.

The rattle would occur at first gear shift both times for me. I didn't think the rattle would replicate itself again, due to the warmer weather. Anyway, to my delight it played up on the third morning there, and they were able to report it to Land Rover, who will advise them what action to take. By the way, that was after the patch was installed.

I'll report what back on what is recommended by LR.

By the way, I couldn't be happier with Southside LR for warranty on this vehicle.

Question, while I think about it...FLOOR MATS. At 76,000km, mine has worn right through! The last Defender didn't have this wear at over 100,000km. Anybody experiencing this?

That's not good that it did the rattle after the software update. That was supposed to be their wonder-fix for this issue.

Are you able to PM me some more of your details? I've had the intermittent rattle in my Puma since new and had no luck demonstrating it to Southside. If I can refer them to your case it may just help get it sorted.

So after the dealer installed the patch it did it the next morning or the morning after?

or are you saying that it was rattling with you after the patch was put on? if so why was it tagged for the software update.

oh and yes our matt has worn right through too, it appears the rubber used is much thinner....we now need to purchase some floor mats

I like Southside LR too, my car always comes back really clean, inside the door jams and everything. They have always done what they said and fixed any niggly problems without fuss.

Your mats should be covered by 3/100 warranty if delivered with them as they are a genuine accessory.

I thought he was talking about the rubber already there.... not actual matts opps

Yup, my drivers side rubber wore through at about 35,000 :(

Oh and yes, my mats have worn a lot more than any previous Defender I've had. Also I have noticed they are a LOT more susceptible to nicks and cuts. My work boots have torn the edge around the driver's seat box to buggery.

That's interesting about the rattle appearing while they had it. Now that we all know about it they will have trouble with the "never heard of that before" standard story.

We bought our car from Southside. They were generally OK but they they managed a few monumental ****ups though. The final straw was when I asked for a service quote for the 4th service and they rattled of a number of big items that they had done at the previous service and then offered an epic price...

Hi All

Thanks for your comments. I don't get on the site that often, so sorry about the delay...

Solmanic, I'd be happy to PM you, but I haven't figured out how to do it yet. If it's something simple, can someone explain please?

Dullbird, Southside advised me on the Wednesday that they did the Patch, and then kept the car parked outside overnight for a final attempt to replicate the rattle. Workshop were able to identify a rattle and reported to LR. I can't say if it was the same rattle I described in this post.

And, this morning I put the windows down for a good listen at cold start, and it was rough and fairly noisy right away. It came normal after about 10 seconds, and did not rattle at gear change. So...maybe they detected the rattle associated with the oil spray jets. At any rate, I'm glad they know about it, as I really would like to keep this Defender longer and have all the issues sorted in the next 22,000km when I'm out of warranty.

Southside said the mats were about $340, and yes they are just the standard issue. I don't think the rubber quality is as good as my 2005 model, and I really would have thought it was a warranty claim. I'm not prepared to fork out for new ones if they don't last. I don't leave dirt and gravel under foot to cause it. In fact I keep it pretty clean.

The way I send a PM (there could be other ways), is to click on the username (top left corner of their post) of the person I want to pm. A menu drops down with "send a private message to ......" as on of the choices.

Select that choice and from there it should be obvious.

Edit to add screen grab.

I have just spoken to Southside enquiring if Land Rover have advised on what action to take over the rattle.

It will be an engine change out, and although LR haven't advised Southside of what the problem is, one possibility is that it might be the oil cooler jets issue.

I did report to them a couple of oil changes ago, that I there was more visible wear debri in the oil filter than I am used to seeing in all my previous engines. They weren't too concerned, and there might not be a direct connection to the rattle either, but I'm glad about the engine changeout, as those things gave me a few concerns about its long term performance, efficiency and reliability.

Southside will advise me when an engine is available.

Will keep you all informed.

hey Brid

I never had a problem with the new patch going in...but then I had a brand new engine attached to my patch :lol2:

Well, the new engine is now fitted to the Puma under warranty, and after a week's running around, it is quieter at idle, and also feels a bit more robust under acceleration.

POWER? It does seem to lack a bit of power compared to the original engine. I realize that it will improve as it beds in more...but it does not hold revs on hills too well at all.

It seems ok up until about 2000 rpm, when it just seems to bog down and go nowhere. I've only done about 500km so far. I'll know for sure next time I go up the Toowoomba range, as the old engine would do it in 5th right up until the 60KPH near the top before changing back. I'd be surprised if it'll match it, by the feel so far.

Does anyone know if these engines need to be tuned to the engine computer when installed? And is it possible that some more work may be required in that department? I'm more old school with diesels. Still got a lot to learn about modern ones. Appreciate comment from those with knowledge here.
