I feel annoyed....

got home yesterday and stepped out of the Defender to find that it was haemorrhaging oil everywhere, with an oil trail leading off down the driveway.

Sump plug had fallen out. Had a service about three weeks ago, and I had been away for over a week so wouldn't have even done 500km.

Cycled up the road and luckily found the plug about 1.5km away. I think I might have got away with it as there was no oil light and no funny noises before I stopped, all seemed normal. Dropped maybe 2l of oil after I stopped.

Absolutely! If I were you I'd be on the phone immediately and getting them to pay for the driveway cleanup and getting it sorted. I'd also buy a lottery ticket for finding the plug. I reckon they owe you a free service for not badmouthing them.
cheers gerald

On my D2 there is at least 15mm of sump plug thread that you CANNOT turn by hand,,
I would think that even bad vibrations would not undo this,,

so,, yes.

I think you should be annoyed,,

Yes, I would at least ring them and discuss your concerns and disappointment.

(Looking at your location, just scrape some ice off to remove the oil stain :p)

I really must update my profile....

I did ring them and asked them to note what had happened. Haven't had a chance to get some more oil yet so not sure what is going to happen when I start it up.

I would definitely top up the oil to full before starting and I reckon they should pay for it and think they are lucky they are not paying for a motor rebuild. Imagine if you were on a long trip miles from home and this happened, would be a totally different story. Evidently they didnt tighten the sump plug, probably put it in hand tight and then forgot to properly tighten. If it wasnt making any noises when you stopped it I would imagine there is no damage done, luckily..................Brian

Had that happen to me in town once. Luckily it only started leaking 100m from where I was going. Lost all the oil before I got a replacement bolt though so the parking lot where I stopped was a mess:twisted:.

Rang a friend to come and tow me away asap. Oh and bought 10L of oil from the super cheap t happened at:D. called it an exhange new for old.

Had my D2 into a well known Perth dealer several months ago for a service. Got it home left it in the garage overnight. Next day, big pool of oil on the garage floor. The sump plug was loose, not even finger tight.

I think you have been to the same dealer as me.

1 other thing, before you replace the sump plg check the thread! It happened to me where they cross threaded the sump plug once on a holden and another time they cross threaded the oil filter on a reco engine in an old mazda , drove it once for about 1 hr stopped overnight, drove about 500m the engine made gargling noises then a bang as it siezed, i put it in neutral and rolled downhill about 3 k's into a garage where I left it for the idiots to pick it up to put in another new engine.

I drilled a fine hole across the head of the sump plug on the BM and use a bit of wire as a security against it unscrewing.
Can't carry much spare oil on a bike.
cheers

Yea, annoyed, but keep in mind everyone makes mistakes, its what happens next that shows what kind of person/company they are... if its apologetic and replacement of all costs incureed and maybe some sort of freeby, then its not to bad:)

Exactly, they have always been good to me in the past (although I have given them a LOT of the hard earned over the years ;)) so I didn't go off on the phone, just said what had happened for the record, we'll see what happens next.

All seems good, filled up the oil and it runs fine, so I think all concerned were lucky.

Interesting about liability though. It has done 205,000km, if the motor had been cooked would they have been required to provide a new motor or one of a similar mileage. Given that I know the history of mine I wouldn't want a second hand one.

Tony you really need to stop running chinamen over asap.
You were VERY lucky to get away with 1.5km with no sump plug!!!!
Does your oil light work???
Mine never has despite checking wiring and replacing senders and the checking dash.
