View Full Version : where to buy - Michelin XZY

It's time to replace the tyres on the Defender. The SP Road Grippers I got off a troopy lasted 60K km, which is the poorest milage I've had from tyres. I would have been happy to buy another set for the right price (around $300 for 4 with under 2K km on them), but the 2nd hand market seems to be a bit high.
I've got a pair of Michelin XZYs on the trailer, which are new; so I thought I could buy another two and put them on the Defender, and move the nearly worn out SPs to the trailer. My dilemma is that the XZY now only comes out as a XZY3, and while it's steering & wet capabilities look a bit better, it's less of an AT in the lug department. I could put XZY3s on the front and the older XZYs on the back. So far prices have varied from $250 -$310 per tyre for the Michelins.
Does anyone know where I can get a pair of older style XZYs in Melbourne?
Can anyone recommend a well priced supplier?
The XZYs seem to have good reviews on both aulro & web searches, and certainly seem to outlast the BFGs in milage.

It might just be different terminology, but over here the XZY was renamed 4x4O/R a while ago. I don't know if that applies to the Australian market as wll, though. Maybe you should look for this one.

Thanks, I'll look into it on Monday.

Call Michelin direct. I called a few local tyre outlets, and no-one had any knowledge of these tyres, or the XZLs either.
I spoke to this lady a few weeks ago, and she emailed me some info on the XZY3s. Price quoted from her was $338 per tyre:

I like the newer XZY pattern, but you can only get it in 7.50 R 16. I'd like to get it in 235/85 16 for my 90 (little bit wider than the 7.50R16s), but they are not available from what I can gather.

The 4x4 O/R is the XZL according to Michelin.
Still looking, otherwise I'll need to get 4 "cheap" tyres - any recommendations on them?

Eldorado, I've got 235/70X16 ATR, 80,000k and still going strong.

When I enquired at my local tyre co. some time ago, they said those tyres only come into Australia fitted to Defenders. Not available otherwise. Don

That's why you need to ring Michelin direct on the numbers I gave above.
They are still available.

Michelin say "NO more XZYs only the XZY3"
I've tried, and a local tyre place has tried to find a couple of old stock XZYs, but to no avail

LR dealers can get XZLs & XPCs direct from Land Rover Aust.
I'd hate to ask how much they are worth though.

Oh - sorry. I thought you were chasing XZLs (the mud version). Yep - only XZY3's available and only in 7.50R16 from what the lady told me. I was after a set in 235/85 16, which they don't do in XZY3 unfortunately.
I have just ordered a set of Pirelli ATR's in 235/85 for my 90 on the recommendation of a few people here who were very impressed with them. First "non-Michelin" tyres I'll have bought for ages. Should turn up Monday next week.

Michelin XZL : Land Rover Part No: HYM 1193 $508 + GST ea :o
I think it's going to be Maxxis 751s after all that; they seem to get a good review on this forum, a mixed but uninformed review on "another forum," and it's new tyres for what 2nd hand Road Grippers seem to be going for.

That's outrageous!! I got 6 XZLs (organised through Michelin) for about $350 each (incl GST and balanced and fitted), from memory, and I thought that was expensive.

I can get them through LR a bit cheaper than that but probably still pretty exxy :(.
