A soft drumming noise..

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to track down each and every noise in my 86 Isuzu 110 (I know.. I know.. lol) and I have worked out most of them... but there is one that has me stumped.

There is a faint drumming noise, its not in the gear box.. it seems drive shaft through to wheels.. Could it be the diff? if so, what is wrong with it? at first I thought universal joints, but it does not change at all depending on acceleration or deceleration or shaft load.

I had a ride in my fathers 2002 Defender today and damn its quiet :( Makes me jealous!

Could be the diff ... Pinion has lost it's preload ... age related




On the road ... you usually hear a change of whine as you, add revs then back off

Put the whole car up on axle stands ... Start motor, put it in top gear, and then you can listen to the diffs as you add & minus revs

give the diff center to a diff mechanic to check and ajust it

Rear diff is a maxi-drive unit - does this change anything?

Can I still just take it out or are there going to be actuators / extra bits attached?

No ... A diff is a diff ....
Yes ... there is a air line going to a steel block on the side of the diff housing ... remove bolts / under the block is the actuator & a spring & a ball bearing
Re move block, catch the spring & the ball bearing / Take note of which way (side) the ball bearing fitted, and you will see a splined collar over the main axle to slide ... // THEN remove axles to remove diff

But firstly, Put it (whole car) on axle stands and listen for noises
