G'day all:)
Well, my 1992 d1 is going in for a blue slip on Wednesday, at the moment i'm fixing up a couple of little things, one of them is trying to remove the ignition key out of the ignition, it just doesn't want to come:twisted:
It twists back and forward fine (turns on and off without a prob) but it just simply won't pull out, i've tried squirting WD40 and graphite powder in there but only seems to make it turn more smoothly:angel:

So has anyone else had an issue like this?
I need to get it out by wednesday, any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated:thumbsup:

Thanks in advance.....TIM.

Tim ... The whole key is stuck in the housing / it works, but you can't remove it???

Vibration method ... 2 person job
Gab a 12mm piece of wooden dowel and a light hammer... tap the dowel, placed on the end / side of the housing and LIGHTLY Tap tap tap while pulling on the key ... See if the vibrations will release it

Which reminds me ... Make sure you have a spare barrel & housing on hand , as once you get the key out ... It may not wanna go back in, as all the little springs & brass nodes, inside will let go

I'ld remove the housing while you've still got the key in it (if possible)

Thanks Mike:cool:
I'm having trouble removing the plastic cover around it, it doesn't want to come off while the key is still in the ignition:mad:
I'll give your idea a go if i can:thumbsup:

Then just unbolt the whole housing ...

and then lay it across a sacrificial alter of a Anvil & then whack it with a ceremonial blessed sledge hammer

OR .....

You should be able to turn the barrel to the on position ... so that you can expose & push the holding button that releases the key barrel from the housing

Install a new one

Try squeezing some graphite powder in the hole.

If you're going to get a new barrel you don't need to get the key out.

And you can probably get the new barrel re-keyed to your old keys so you don't have to do the lot.

I've got a solution:evil:

Leave the key in the ignition ..that way you will never lose it:Rolling:

What sucker would ever want to steal a Landrover?...only someone who is ****ed and wants a cheap ride home.

(Tojo and Nissan drivers wouldn't give it a second look)....but that's their problem!

Hope you fix it

There are threads on "ïgnition key won't turn" etc in the D2 area.
All relate to the damaged wafers in the ignition barrel and suggest ways to remove /fix it

I had that problem with the old Rangie, when I pulled up at work one morning (5AM) pulled out the key and all the brass tumblers and springs followed the key out :(:(.

Luckily it was a quiet day and I spent the whole shift reassembling the lock barrel.

If you have an immobiliser with central locking why not just leave the key in?

Take the remote with you....;)

How would they know? Wouldn't have thought they would bother pulling the key out.....;)

Had the same problem in my D1. Locksmith said it was from the weight of keys hanging on the end of the ignition key. The solution was to lift the key up and move back and forth quite fast until it came free. I was advised to use Boltoff, as it has Teflon in it, instead of graphite and to spray heaps of it into the barrell. This washes all the grease and grime out of the barrell. I did manage to get the key out after a while. Had the same problem in my D2 and used the same solution. Worked fine and never had a problem since. Good luck.

Gary

Ive had BMW's Rangy's & pinball machines with lock problems.

The only thing that works is a heavy grease squirted into the barrell, and plenty I mean plenty of working the key back and forth to get it into the springs ETC in the barrel.
