View Full Version : Matilda's hood - on or off?

Hello Folks - just wondering if I should remove the tilt from Matilda as she is just sitting in a carport and might be for a while.

Is it better to store in a dry place - i.e. indoors, or is it OK to just leave it on the vehicle, or does it not matter either way?

If she is in a carport, then it doesn't really matter wether the tilt is on or off. As long as it is kept dry and clean.

If you do take it off, make sure it is absolutely dry and clean, fold it up and keep it somewhere safe. My workshop canvas for example, is stored in a plastic tub inside the house.

Thanks Shonky - I might take it off - it will get rather humid soon so moisture might be a problem. It might as well be open top for summer anyway. I'll do as you suggest - as it is already clean, I'll just fold it up and store in a plastic tub (in our bedroom to further annoy Kat Woman :p)

I wouldn't have thought humidity woud be such an issue, as long as it can dry out readily (ie, opened out on the vehicle)

I used a tub with a loose fitting lid. Don't want it greenhousing away on whatever moisture is in there!

This is just what I do, but there may be better suggestions out there. :)

NB: I should point out that my workshop canvas is off the vehicle because the vehicle is off the road and kept outside. When the canvas is on the truck or workshop trailer, it will stay there and the vehicle will be garaged.

Personally I'd leave it on in summer. We had a soft-top Suzuki years ago and on the odd occasion we took the top off in summer, we would whack it straight back on. Brisbane's just too damn hot to go topless - you will be audibly crackling when you're not moving. Also you may miss the mobile tool shed when it's off if you want to leave stuff in the back overnight. And the possums will have a field day in there. Finally, it's on nice and straight now so I'd leave it alone until you need to do some work that requires it off.

In would support the other comments about getting frazed in the sun - found that with my first series 1 and my e-type.

One suggestion though - leave it topless but get a small bikini top made to just cover the cab area with a removable bow - and store it in your car for when things get too hot. It is nice going topless in the late afternoon early evening.

I bought a truck cab for mine. In the winter it seals the cab up from animals using it for a hotel, and in the summer it keeps the sun/rain off your head. If I want to go topless I can remove the cab by myself. An 86" makes a great wee ute and my Rotti loves it!

I would keep the soft top for special occasions.

Don't do it Dan. :o

To me at least, a S1 SWB looks odd with a truck cab. LWB is a different story.

I appreciate the offer, Lost Landy - but I think I'm going to get myself a big hat! I know I've been told - but I want that tilt off. :D But if you have the crank boss off an old bumper lying around - I do need one of those.

Most likely as I only have 6 series 1 truck cabs, 2 being used to keep the rain/sun of my Wolf-Hound and the other 4 are keeping the rain of a few spare 2 litre motors lol.

Didn't think you had any S1 stuff Mrs HH. The S1 truck cab is nothing like the S11/111 variants.

I have one on the 107 and it will stay. I also have one for the '88, but it will not go on, for the reason stated. ;)
