Advice wanted on rebuilding engine and transmission

Hi,

Well it was nice to meet some of you at the Restoration Day (Victoria). Before going to do the body (paint job in Sand colour) I will focus on the engine and transmission.

Unfortunately, not being a mechanic and living in a small apartment in the city (Melbourne) I am unable to do much myself and need to rely on mechanics and engine rebuild companies.

The engine needs to be rebuild and I am looking for advice and suggestions on rebuild companies (Vic), parts, suppliers, website links, etc. (2.0 liter Petrol, 1958, S1, 88").

In addition I am thinking of giving the transmission a preventive overhaul. I believe there are several kinds of transmissions going around, some of them with design problems (I overheard someone say). How to recognize what I have? Where is the serial on the transmission? And then, what should be done to improve and rebuild the transmission? Again, advice is welcome on companies (Vic), parts, suppliers, website links, etc.

Can't help with the suppliers Kris other than to search this forum, as the subject has been raised before, or ask the club members.

The serial number is on the right hand of the top cover.

I have recently overhauled mine and was surpirised to find that: the top cover has no gasket; the dipstick has no seal; and the shims on the back of the transfer box output shaft were not sealed to stop leakage of oil. My advice is to get your mechanic to use a sealant on the shims (Loctite 515); sealant on the top cover (Loctitie Black Maxx) and other covers; and consider the dipstick if you intend to go wading. You have probably gathered that I am a Loctite fan but any suitable gasketing liquid will suffice,
