G'day
Have just joined the ranks of Defender owners.
I've noticed that when I turn on the ignition, the fuel pump makes a squealing noise and gets louder once the motor is running.
The noise does not go away, even while driving.
Now before I take it to the mechanics and get it replaced, is there anything I can do to fix it ?

If it stops after 10-20 seconds its just priming / building pressure, if it continues when your driving... better get $920 ready as its just about to be used at a LR mechanic.

Oh, no !!
Ahh well, I've spent $$$$ on new stuff for it already so I guess I might as well, get it replaced as well.

hopefully you have a deep pocket because they not cheap units:or if you can source one through a supplier it will be 250 odd dollars cheaper and very easy to fit well it was in my disco ,don't know if its the same as a def but on mine there is a acess hatch under the carpet in the rear storage area a few screws and a plate will get you to the top of the pump insure you clean out all the dust with a vacuum first this area must be spotless there are 4 colour coded thin pipe which clip off and a snap on electrical plug ...vacuum the area again the pump then can unscrew out ensure you don't drop anything into your tank ,insert the new pump making sure it screws in correctly when fitting the new snap on colour coded pipe clamps very important to make sure they snap in correctly as they have large amounts of pressure and they can blow off which is not good ,
as i said i don't know if def is the same as a disco maybe some one here can confirm it but trust me if it is ,it is a lot cheaper than going to a mechanic and very easy if you know the basics if not ??????????? take it to some one who can help ya ASAP

There's no access hatch on a Defender
There is an old post here about how to cut your own access hatch though :) (with measurements & everything).

They can also squeel if the fittings are cracked and draw in air. Unfortunately the fittings that crack are integral to the pump so that's a new pump anyway.

Mine squeels. Been doing it for 2 years now at lest. I swaped it out with a replacement at it still made the same noise so for now I put the old one back in.

Welcome to LR. Keep your wallet open for the rest of the time you have your car :(
If you are half handy they are easy to replace your self.

same same but i reckon i'm at about three years though, squeals constatntly when running but with ignition on but not running only runs for 30 sec so pump is making pressure.

Last time mine was squealing I pulled it out and the filter on the pump was clogged with green slime. Cleaned it up and it was fine.
I have cut an access hatch in the rear floor, a well worthwhile exercise, especially as I have a long range tank and it's a bugger to remove.

Yes I had that pump filter half blocked. Cleaned it off and the noise would have halved. Since I know I have at least one spare pump i'm not worried and just carry it with me. Still need to test the others I scored.
