Look who turned up at the close of last Monday's Brisbane LR meeting.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/10/771.jpg
Eric and his girlfriend had just cleared customs in Brisbane after arriving on some ship.
This jollopy rolls in, with the occupants declaring "We here for the club meeting. Just in from Germany"
Eric had a suit job in Germany with corporate America and drove an Audi. With the global downturn, he decided to go touring in Oz for a year, until things improve.
The club members gave his truck the once over.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/10/772.jpg
Eric claims the ex - ambulance defender is from the Dutch army and did a tour of duty in the Fauklands War.
Just a few of the mods I noticed:
LPG
Reversing camera
Heater installed - won't need that in QLD
Bed and sink, cupboards in back
Sand boards on the side act as fold down tables
Spot lights on the front, turn with the steering
Engine cranking arm stores on the bullbar
2.2+ motor petrol I think (disco driver)
Servo system added, so his girlfriend could operate the brakes
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/10/773.jpg
Club members took some happy snaps, handed out stickers and had a chat with the crew.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/10/774.jpg
Eric has spent a heap of time on mods, and other than a bit of snow, has never been offroad. Welcome to Oz.
We gave him some tips on Sand driving as he is heading to Fraser Island.

If you see these guys around say hi. I told Eric to get on the forum if he needs any help, so keep an eye out guys.

Yep - looks like a Marshall bodied Series III Ambulance to me. Used by the poms and the Dutch so his claim is likely true. ;)
I would love to get my hands on one of them...
Great looking bit of kit!

an interesting question!!!
a fair number of the original 1947 model are still running and so really we have no idea how long they will last, obviously later models have later adaptations to assist in its life being lengthened but........
Oh... :o you didnt mean the car, you meant the tourists.....
sorry!

They have the same Moto-Lita steering wheel that I run on my Cobra. That's a nice touch, very classy.

G'day All, I agree, it's a late model S2A Marshall bodied L/rover lhd, it is not a Defender full stop!!!, and as to the claim it served in the Falklands war well the Brits did all that fighting, the Dutch were not involved at all, so if it is indeed a ex-dutch army thats where it served it's time not down Sth in the Falklands cheers Dennis:angel:
ps I wouldn't think that the Poms were still supplying this model to the dutch, the Falklands war was in 1982.

Although they could have sold it second hand much in the way the Kiwis purchased the Skippys - although it's being LHD makes one wonder.
Unless once again during the re-build it was converted.
(There are a lot of LR chassis that are ambidexterous. The 1948 models, one ton models and the series forward controls all have both tubes for the RHD and LHD steering relays.)

If that means a 2.2 litre petrol motor driving all that stuff I hope they're not in a hurry!

Hi All
Just read some of the responses / queries.
I only have comments made by Eric last Monday night.
Eric and his girlfriend are planning to tour for 12 months.
Not sure how long they will be on Fraser for.
They would be mad not to hit WA in that time.
He claimed the vehicle weighed 3.2 ton. I guess that was loaded. The motor seemed very small for the application. (We saw fully loaded D1 diesels struggling on the Simpson Desert) Eric claimed he hit a top speed of 119 Km/hr on a German autobahn.

Aussie bloodboxes are much the same size (not as wide, but taller) and weight, and have the 2.25 Petrol aswell. ;)
Yes, it is slow. :( It will do 50mph all day though, and I have got up to 105km/h once! (downhill!)

Very late to re-join this part of the thread.
Unlike the US military who use their LHD vehicles everywhere*, the British use LHD vehicles in countries where LHD is the national rule, including the forces in Germany and elsewhere in Europe.
It seems that Eric's vehicle was a Brit LHD vehicle.
Given that the Falkland Islands were a British territory, it is unlikely that the Brits would have taken LHD soft skinned vehicles to the war.

* The US Navy even drove on the RHS side of their base at North West Cape (Exmouth) WA and crossed sides when they drove out the gate!

Eric and lili are now in Melbourne and have managed to break the 109.
They have gone to the dark side and bought a Toymotor to finish the trip.
As a result the ambulance is up for sale , somehat stripped out from when you guys saw it but still a going concern.
If it's not sold , it goes to the crusher to comply with Customs requirements for imported vehicles on a Carnet de passage.
Would be great for someone to rescue this!

Axles , axles ,axles , prop shafts , diff? and bits but all rebuilt.
They then noticed a crack in the chassis that is apparently repairable but they've run out of $ and time and selling all their accessories and bits for cash and buying another vehicle was their preferred option.
It's available in Melbourne as a drivable concern ( minus the front disc brakes ) for $ 2500

However if they do sell it here the tax will have to be paid, it will have to get local roadworthy etc (if it hasnt alrady) and so on and so forth.

I don't think so Vlad.
AFIK the $ 2500 is what they have to give the Customs Dept.
Alternately it goes to the crusher and they don't have to pay anything.
I don't think you have to sell with a RWC?
pete

No you don`t have to sell with a road worthy, but you must hand the plates in and sell it unregistered.Which in this case is not such a issue.

Think you will find that some lightweights and rag top 90's made it too the Falklands. and later after the dust had settled LR set up a major(ish well for the falklands big) outlet there and send numerous landy's to the islands each year to be snapped up by the locals

A LROCV member has bought it to restore :)It will be a pretty interesting project to restore, particularly with a hole in the roof for the sunroof, no front hubs or brakes - Eric sold them off - heater demister gone, sold, speedo sold, snorkel sold, steering wheel sold, seats sold, overdrive sold. A new big hole in between the cab and casualty compartment, lining off the walls, most if not all of the military fittings gone and extra holes in the mudguards and firewall to boot.

PeteLooking at the couple of pics that Eric sent me and the one that showed a chassis repair, I really think that vehicle would have needed a chassis swap. Bad luck because I had already identified an available ambidextrous 6 cyl chassis, but I was being insistent that I wanted the disk brakes. I guess it was easier/more profitable for him to part the vehicle out.
He never even bothered to ask what I was prepared to pay for the complete vehicle.
Did I mention that the wide wheels had also been sold! (Not that I wanted them).
Not to worry, I am considering importing an unmolested example direct from the UK. Just because of the rarity of Marshall bodied ex-mil Land Rovers in Australia.
land864
8th June 2010, 11:19 PM
I think the issue with the disc brakes was more one of the fact that they had been sold/promised to someone else as a separate item from the vehicle.
In his ad I think he did say that bits that were sold separately needed a replacement provided as part of the deal :)
