Dumbo question

Hope this doesnt sound like a dumb question,but i gotta change the diff oils on the D2.

Checked them after cape trip,no water in them ,but are pretty dirty,particularly the rear one.

Looking at the drain plug,it doesnt have a copper washer on it,similar to a sump plug,so how does it seal?
Do you have to use a sealant on it,if so what type,is it a tapered thread.Have changed diff oils in other brands of vehicles,but the drain plugs have always been similar to a sump plug & had a copper or alloy washer to seal with.

Do you still have the plastic drain plug or have you replaced them with the brass plug, the brass plug has a rubber washer on it from memory.

If the D2 is the same as other rover diffs they have tappered thread on the fill plugs as well as the drain plugs , Thats how they seal;)

Yer,got the brass fill/level plugs,with a seal,they will be OK,

So the drain doesnt need any sealent,just screw it in & the taper is enough to seal it?

As long as you don't force it all the way into the diff. I hear you have to open the diff to find it again if you do:D.

On a seriouse note yes just do it back up.

I always seal up sump plugs with a little loctite 567. If you're of any doubt as to the filler plug winding into the diff or not contact MR automotive and order one of the flanged filler plugs.

Found the magnets in both diff drain plugs completely coated with very fine metal particles,like a sort of sludge,amost 1/2 inch thick the rear had more on it.The
oil was supposedly changed 30k ago.

The T/C magnet had a few larger bits on it but very little else.

All oils were pretty black ,but not burnt,or silvery.
Is that normal for the diffs?
More frequent oil changes look like the go.
Anyone got any ideas?

Sounds like your magnets are working fine.

As long as there is not too much stuff that the magnets are not catching I'd say sticj with the recommend service intervals and half them if you are doing a lot of hard work.
