Hi all, I have searched for any postings on Insurance and there are many but none seem relevant so my apologies if this has been asked before.

I have to organize insurance for my new defender when it arrives next week, did I mention my new defender arrives next week. :D

I got a quote from QBE, it was $1000 a year, I have full no claims I think that is called rating 1 here, and I am in my late 30's never had an accident.

I am not adverse to paying this if it is indeed a good policy but I have my doubts.

Does this seem expensive? the car is standard with no mods as of yet. Also it had a $450 excess, I am a bit worried as I could not see anything relating to off road driving on the policy, I would hate to find out it was void be cause I was on fraser or something.

Any recommendation would be gratefully accepted.

thanks
Patrick.

Hi Patrick,

We are with QBE as well and pay $868 but our Puma is now 12 months old. We get a discount for being Perth Glory members, having a second car insured with them and the house too so that $1000 may be ballpark. I have left it with SWMBO to sort out insurance over the last 4-5 yrs so haven't had to haggle for a while! Interesting to hear what others pay for their Pumas.

Well I guess that's not a bad price then,

To cripesamighty: Have you had to claim from QBE? I am just wondering what there restrictions maybe on off road claims.

Thanks for our replies.

I have a panel beater mate who prefers to deal with Suncorp or Elders. Suncorp particularly, do try to do the right thing wanting repairs done to a high standard and not looking for loopholes, or the cheapest way out.

may I recommend NRMA, they embarrassed the other companies by several hundred dollars so I added a few items of cover I normally wouldnt have.

Hey thanks for that, I just got a quote online from them and they are nearly twice the price. But then I am not a member so maybe that's why.

Does your cover include full off-road third party cover? Is it negotiated replacement value or is any full write-off claim based on the current market value? These will affect the cost, but in general $1000 is pretty good for a new car.

OK just did another quote with QBE but clanged a few things.

New car policy fully comp with 4 years 100,000k new car replacement (this is worth it I think) $450 excess (cant seem to lower this) cover anywhere in Australia, no exclusions for off road unless unregistered.

No mods though as I don't have any yet apart from the tow bar, but can add them later. anyway is now the cheapest I have found at $788.

$788.00Monthly: $72.10 Fortnightly$33.30Excesses &

confirmation or policy schedule for details

Just because there are no exclusions for off-road cover does not therefore mean that it will cover you off-road. You will only have off-road cover if the policy specifically states that you have it otherwise all car insurances will only cover you on-road. Roads might include paper roads but not always and certainly would not cover most tracks unless they appear on cadastral maps as roads.

Off-road cover should also cover you against things like causing bush fires, etc. which can get very expensive even if you did not act in a way likely to cause it, say your exhaust emits a spark that causes a fire.

OK just gave them a call and asked for more info regarding off road driving, she said that the policy covers anywhere in Australia that include parks and trails as long as you are not trespassing.

Also Legal liability cover up to 30 mil and that will cover damage to other peoples property including fire. I never asked if that include bush fire maybe I should have.

Thanks for prompting me to clarify this.

Great. Sounds like it is a good policy and well priced too.

Hi Patclan,

Yep pretty sure it covers offroad as we go caving off the beaten track all over Oz and SWMBO would have told them that at the time. Having said that I double-check when I get home!!
