I have a RRC 89 (cut to a Ute - tray 300 mm above chassis) that I have just taken the long range fuel tank out of as hangs too low. Will dispose of the long range tank.
I have a 94 Disco plastic fuel tank I was thinking about putting into the RRC but seems the mounts are different - not an easy fit it seems.
Does anyone know what type of tank the 89 rangie would have had originally as might have to find on to put back in unless I can find an alternative type of tank that will sit under the Ute tray and above the chassis. I wodnered if the RRC 89 had a steel tank like the earlier RRC?
Suggestions welcome here - I was thinking of going to wrecker to see what jap ute tanks might do the job and then fit an inline Hi Pressure pump for the 3.5 EFI.
Or does anyone know of a street legal after market tank I could put under the tray but above the chassis rail?
Thanks

The mounts are different but it's easy enough to get around that.
I have a late D1 long range tank in my '87 RR. The rear mount on the car just needed to be redrilled & I folded up a new front mount bracket & welded it in place of the original.
I can take piccies tonight if that's any help.
The '89 was still 3.5 so it would have the steel tank.

Hmm
From memory my 89 had a steel tank.
My gas fitter took it out and left it outside to rust, I later had a friend that was looking for one.
I try and call a couple of landrover gas fitters, they usually are happy just to get rid of them asap.
While you are at it, check the fuel pump and perhaps cut an access hole in the back floor to gain access to the to of tank to get to sender and pump.
I am not sure, but some have a hole there and some don't.
Anyhow, mine was steel and I do now seem to remember that the installer also said that some do have plastic, not sure if its like a lucky dip or if there is a date change over.
Good luck.
Oh, TRS in Adelaide have plenty in their yard also, a quick call to them would fix all your questions, speak to Ian, he is friendliest.

My 89 has a steel tank. I cant see why you cant use a latter tank and adapted mounts as the chassis are very similar.

I was thinking of putting the plastic disco tank I have in but it has a long filler with fume recovery as part of it.
Remember this is for a Range Rover that has been chopped to a Ute (see pic) so on the rear there is a flat tray and the chassis rails to play with.
From memory the old steel rangie tanks has a lower filler than the disco plastic tank I have and so will be a much easier fit under the tray (in terms of the filler etc).
Hence while I have a Disco tank on the floor easier to put a Rangie tank in I thought - at least until I get a new cell made and engineered for under the tray.

Thanks Philip - so would an early 3.5 efi disco have a steel tank?
I am just trying to find out what models to chase the wreckers for parts from. Easiest fit is what I am after to get back on the road while contemplating a fuel cell and rear chassis cut.

Thanks to all that posted plus those who PM'ed - I have bought a 88 model steel tank with all fitting and pump so will fit that as a temp move.
Although I tested it last night it seems the steel tank is just small enough to fit under the tray back between the tray and the chassis next to the cab. So I will be able to use the steel tank when I cut the chassis at the rear to shorten the overhang. IE I can shift the tank further up the chassis and not have to find an aftermarket ADR approved tank - will just need the cut and tank move engineered.
