I took my Disco in for a service, a quick repair and inspection today and left the mechanics later in the afternoon with my wallet about $1500 lighter.

When I got home I told the missus that I would be checking the car over after dinner just to make sure nothing had been forgotten or missed.

She said "When you're spending $1500 at the mechanics you shouldn't need to be checking anything."

"That is quite true" I replied "But I'm going to check it anyway."

Lucky I did really as I found this:

At least I know the serpentine belt was replaced but I think I'll be buying a spanner big enough to reattach the fan myself tomorrow and giving the mechanics a call on Monday...

Lucky it didn't fall backwards into the serpentine belt on the way home.:o I would have words with the mechanic.(nicely of course;))

That was lucky (well - unlucky to discover that, but lucky you found it).

Hope your mechanic is suitably repentant on Monday.

you shouldn't need a spanner to put it on.....just wind it on till its relativity tight and start the engine it tightens it's self (or at least thats how we have always done mine and never had any issues)....the fact its off says to me that it just wasn't put on not that its fallen off or anything.

what did you have done for the $1500 ???

If you haven't found it out already, it's a LH thread. And if it's a 32mm viscous hub nut, you can get a cranked spanner for the Ford versions of the fan hub that works well. I've encountered Disco v8's with a 36mm nut. Don't know if there is a cranked spanner for that.

luckily, as with most things land rover,
it isn't the same as the ford one, so is a different size.

how do i know that, well my ford spanner don't fit mine.

thats how I do it and I'll back that. IF it had spun off it would have chunked the shroud and the radiator on the way.

there is and if you cant find one some judicious use of MR Vice and MR hammer with a block of hardwood can crank any flat spanner. In some casses where cousin flat spanner is a strong specamin a visit from Uncle blow torch may be in order.

This is correct. In 1988 I worked in a Ford dealership. The current model Ford was the XF which had the viscous fan. I probably removed one a week for 12 months. I never once tightened with a spanner.

The only thing I did different to above is that I only put the fan on by a couple of threads. I then start the engine and if the engine starts instantly it winds the fan on and will nip it tight.

I never ever had one come back.

Dave.

Serpentine V8's are a RH thread. Early V8 and Tdi are Left hand thread.

I ALWAYS gently tap the viscous hub tight with the spanner after winding it on. (read GENTLY).

Same here, just a tap for peace of mind, Regards Frank.

I got the the service done (labour and consumables) and I also got an inspection done to make sure there was nothing else that might go wrong in the near future (labour and a few odds and sods including a new serpentine belt) but I also needed a new Air Flow Meter which bumped the overall cost up at the end.

The Air Flow Meter made up over a third of the total amount on its own.
