Our RR which has been perfect has now decided to not start sometimes,it doesn't matter if it's hot or cold it goes through the motions but won't fire. The dash lights come on,the engine turns over very strongly but won't catch.I replaced the key fob battery and all was good then first thing this morning it wouldn't fire but when I tried in neutral it started after 4 goes. The engine runs very well,I just returned from NSW and it run fine up to 140k's/hr and returned 8.96ltrs per hundered over the whole 7600k trip. It's a 3.0lt TD,any suggestions. Pat,
It may be the fuel pump.
The only way to check is to fit a fuel pressure gauge if u can get your hands on one.
Out of curiosity how many K's on the beast.
Cheers. HTH.:)

Funny you mention the pump,it was serviced last week and it come up with a low fuel pressure fault but it wasn't taken any further.I will get it hooked up and see if it has the fault logged again. It has 115,000k's and it doesn't make any noise. Pat

Hi Fraser130
Does read like a RFI problem to me, with a dodgy connection, letting radio noise into the wiring loom
When it would not start was the air/ vehicle temperature much hotter?
As things cool a bit, they can tighten a little and this goes for shielded cable connections, earth points, connectors in the wiring loom, etc.
The next time it refuses to start, try and jiggle the wiring loom, at various places around the car, like next to the ECM and under the bonnet, whilst someone is operating the starter.
Cheers Arthur

I have to fess up that I had done a bit of re-coding on the LCM to disable the headlight warnings as the car has aftermarket HID's fitted, and it now looks like the immobiliser module had locked me out for a time.....I think I recall reading something about a 1 hour lockout if you do the wrong thing, but I can't find it any more.........
I'm not going to be doing that again as I have now done it, so hopefully it won't happen again......But a Faultmate Extreme is looking good at the moment.....just need to sell something to be able to afford it!
Cheers all, and thanks for you advice!

Changed the key fob battery and it's never happened again. Pat

Bottom Line Up Front: If you tighten the bolts on the face of the starter motor, it will drastically improve your ability to start [a previously laboring or unstartable] car!
Background:
After several days of fault finding (battery testing, replacement battery, new fuel filter, concerns about fuel pump, starter motor, earth etc etc) - it now appears that the cause of the laboured start (often 4-6 seconds of turning, if it started at all) was simply two screws / bolts on the starter motor that were loose (~five threads).
I determined this whilst at the mechanics (he asked me to start the car whilst he inspected the engine bay) - he noticed sparks coming from the starter, and after inspection of the face of the starter, he noted the loose screws - he grabbed his spanner, tightened them up and away I went - I was elated!
By simply tightening these screws (one is easy to get to, the other not so much); the car went from a labouring beast, to a prompt starter. I can try and take photos if anyone needs them, but I really hope this info helps someone out.
