View Full Version : Secret Handshake Anyone?
The Rover
18th October 2009, 04:52 PM
I used to own a VW Beetle, many moons ago. When one VeeDub owner passed another on the road, the custom was to wave with your thumb, little finger and fore finger, extending from an otherwise clenched fist (a "W" shape).
Now I finally own a Landy, and not meaning to be rude to my fellow Landy owners by ignoring them as our paths cross on the road, is there anything I should know? I'm guessing the "L" shape might be misconstrued :D
Yours in polite gesturing,

Never heard of any specific waves. When I had my Kombi in the '70's it was just your standard lift the hand or index finger, much the same as with the Land Rovers.

I believe that in the 70s when drivers of the very early rotary Mazdas passed each other they held up a varying number of fingers.
The number of fingers represented the number of engines they had had replaced under warranty.
The story is probably apochryphal, but they did have a lot of trouble with seals on the early ones.

Yes the secret handshake goes like this.
Extend right hand towards other person as per normal.
Just before grasping the other persons right hand briskly wipe right hand on trousers.
Repeat the phrase...."Sorry mate hands are a bit oily"
Only a true Land Rover owner will continue with the shake and add the phrase "She's right mate, mine are just as bad":D

Yeah most Land Rover drivers wave, but they don't need to make special symbols, they know what marque they're driving.:p
