View Full Version : Second Etag

On a couple of trips to Sydney I have nearly forgotten to take my RTA etag that was in the other car.

I contacted the RTA to see about getting a second tag on my account - no problems but another security deposit would be required.

Then the guy said that if you have a valid account with the rego numbers of all vehicles using the account registered on the account - you do not even need an etag if you used the NSW tollway system. When the photo of your car is taken the system automatically will link it to your account (assuming the rego number is on the account) and the toll is automatically deducted from your account - WITH NO ADDITIONAL ADMINISTRATION FEES.

Now while I am not intending to test the system - there is a chance I will one day forget to take my e-tag. However I have been told porkies by the RTA over the phone before - so has anyone with an RTA e-tag used the Sydney system without your tag and were there any issues.

Also would this apply on interstate tollways if I was travelling without my RTA etag.

Thanks

Garry

I've been on the M5 without a tag & they've linked the number plate to my account.
Mrs Scouse has used the M7 with the tag in the glovebox (for security reasons ) & they linked it the same way.

To save you any worry, let me register my 4 cars to your account & I'll make sure it works for you too :D.
Hey, I'm such a nice guy so just give me your account details & I'll do it myself.

Yep I habitually use motorways in my various vehicles sans eTag. ;)

We have 1 eTag, and 4 number plates registered against it, and we make little use of Sydney roads.
Just need to check your statement as it is possible for someone in another state to have the same number plate. In our case the confusion was with a motorbike and a numbers only plate, confused with our plate. A phone call started the 'investigation' and credited our account eventually.

Too easy - maybe I will just leave the tag in the main car and not worry about the other car - you cannot hear the tag go off in the 101 anyway.

Thanks for all the responses - if I get pinged I will just tell them that Scouse told me to do it :).

If you do get pinged, there will be option to supply your Tag number. This will mean it gets billed to your tag, at the normal rate instead of toll + mega bucks "admin fee" Interestingly, this is irrespective of wether the car is even linked to the tag! :o

My younger sister racked up ~$150 of toll notices recently  and I paid them off with my tag. The total amount without the extra charges was about 1/3rd!

I've had no problems around Sydney when the tag has fallen off the windscreen or been left in the other car - as long as the rego number is recorded against a tag it gets billed at the normal rate.

Beware that if you sell a vehicle you need to have that registration number taken off your tag account. (its not part of the normal notice of disposal/change of owner process) You can end up paying the new owner's toll fees and the RTA will not refund these charges to you. One of the RTA operators told me she had seen a bill of $700 on someone's account - tolls incurred by the new owner - the account holder neglected to have the registration number deleted from his account.

Also check your quarterly statement - where the toll fee is set by the height of the vehicle you can end up being overcharged - happened to me with the Disco on the toll plaza at Auburn - only on one particular lane, the others were OK. RTA refunded the overcharged ammount.
