Her name is Jessica Watson (www.jessicawatson.com.au).
Jesse Martin was the cat that sailed around the world solo at 17 years.

The tracking position is 2 days late? It displayed the 18th. As I heard on news she was off the north tip of NZ and the tracking pic shows her just out from Sydney.

Sick of all these people whinging she's too young, inexperienced blah blah blah.
Pff, can't break records without taking risks...
I reckon the first bloke to jump out of a plane with a big bag over his head probably got the same reception, or the first person to jump off a cliff with a rope on there leg, or the...well, you get the point :p but only need one person to take that first risk, prove a point then let all the others follow!

I was tracking her Sunday night via -
Live Ships Map - AIS - Vessel Traffic and Positions (http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/)
She has dropped off the picture after getting away from the mainland. I think you'll find the tracks are being reported by shore based receiving stations and then into a database from which there is an Internet gateway. If you view the map of Australia you can sea the areas being covered.
Out at sea vessels fitted with AIS can view a local picture of other vessels fitted with AIS nearby. Various alarms can be setup if another AIS vessel gets too close etc.
Here's a track from when she left The Spit up until her track dropped off later that night-

Can be pretty interesting watching the ships getting about. There are different update intervals. If you look at Sydney Harbour you can track the ferries getting about, and down in Bass Strait you can watch the Spririt Of Tasmania going back and forth.
