Installment 1-
Hi,
I always loved the S1’s for a few things, their simplistic business like shape, (no, its not a box there’s a curve there see…there on the front guards and the sides of the bonnet smarty!!) and the fact they can do what they were designed for.
I never got to get one but it led me to buy a defender which I had for a number of years living in remote SA and had no problems with at all.. This increased my love of the landys!
I was making enquiries about an S1 in ANDAMOOKA and luckily ended up with a 1963 2a Ex military 88” (HORRIE), this led to another 1963 2a Ex military 88” (the VET) being sourced and obtained. –The L/R bug has got me. (and he bites hard!)
Anyway I still look forlornly at S1’s and recently one came up on Evil bay on a property near my current Riverland home.. My long suffering but very understanding wife, (realising I would probably sulk around for days after it was over,) sent me off to have a look… So day of the auction ending off I went to look and 3 hours later, (& with her blessing!!) the auction ended and I became the owner of a S.1. !!.
It’s a 1956 109” – and had a few spare parts with it….(see photos in coming posts!) -and I think its the newer "styleside ute" model  - (see photos!)
I’ll just plod along with this, my aim is just to get it running and registered
at the moment, and maybe repainted etc later but at the moment just running is the challenge!!!
I have been watching the progress of other here and assure you there will be no rapid progress on this one!! (work/family commitments and need to get progress on the EXMILs also!) I am sure I shall be bothering you all lots about silly questions but have already found out lots over time just “drooling” over the S1 forum!
Thanks to “Mrs Ho Har” and “Ho Har” for their support and advice on line before / during and since I got it a few days ago!!! Ill post bits every now and again to keep it updated…

I collected it on Thursday (when I should have been mowing the “lawn”) and brought it home.
It appears to have originally been slate grey/blue, then its had a coat of chamberlain orange (don’t you love farms!) and lastly turned greenish. The tray obviously is the cut down model so rarely seen these days!!!!

Great find - nice to see it still has the original engine. If this is a 56 it will be one of the very early 109s as they were not released in the UK until late 1956.
So you going to keep the rear tray in line with its farm working heritage or swap it over to an original tub?
Have lots of fun with it :).

Installment 3 !
Saturday myself and one of my lads (Will – 6yrs) played around with the S1. It was allegedly last driven around the farm a “only few months ago”. The fuel smelt stale but I couldn’t move the screen/filler tube so I just topped it with nice new stuff and tried to get him going!
First problem was the electric fuel pump that needed to be “hand tickled” to work…. This doesn’t seem like it will really work that well whilst driving, I am assuming!, So I crawled through the spare parts and grabbed the best looking electric fuel pump in amongst it.
Test run, it appeared to work (well it clicked regularly!!) – installed..
After getting it to run and then have it die a number of times, I decided I must inspect the fuel tank, and after much mucking about, got the filler tube/screen out…..and then emptied this out of the tank!!!
19786
NO! not the kid!!! the fuel! (about 30 litres all up!)
here is a closer view of the fuel!!
19787
and the 'dregs' after it was decantered (was not trying to keep dregs either!)
19788
inside the fuel tank after a couple of wipe arounds... still dirty
19789
ANYWAY- after lots of wiping out and scrubbing, flushing of fuel line, replacing of filter and replacement filter --(better over cautious than not-- and I can use it as a spare!!!!!)
......its running...(fairly sweetly) ….its gonna be a while now before anything else much happens…..
Question 1--(of many) ---
where does the horn go and what should it look like??
I have a heap of spare ones most are huge but where and how is the question!
(s1 wiring diagram link anyone?)
Cheers

Thanks Garry..
It bears serial number "123601265"
And thanks to the HO HARs, I was sent this!
"according to CalVIN, the Land Rover VIN CALculator
"123601265"
1 Type: Land Rover
23 Model: Land Rover, Series I,
Body type: Basic,
Wheel base: 109in (Long Wheel Base, LWB )
Engine: Petrol
Destination: Right-hand drive (RHD), completely knocked down (CKD)
6 Model year: 1956
01265 Serial number"
so its 56, the engine is from a different one ('55 "home market model?" I think it said, and is spread bore...
I have numbers of spare engine, diff, gearbox and a casted number from t/fer case still to follow up..
Id like to go back to original tray (and currently have no tailgate anyway!!) but until that happens I was toying with a wooden planked top across the wheel arches to make it look like a flat top!!!.. but as I said, only toying with that idea, it would come up almost even or just above the current sides! Yes!! Thanks!! Its like Xmas here!! (for me anyhow, nay isnt so sure!)
For those who dont know, Both my ex mils are missing "ingredients" essential to being cooked back up to mil spec.
I found some panels& parts in qld, POP058 collected and babysat them for me, then sorted out what I needed and got rid of rest (properly-no throw aways!) for me, he then conveyed them all to "BRISVEGAS".. Thanks Paul!
Then the load was dropped off with the "HO HARS" , Harry and Caroline had not only taken possession of my stash they added lots of bits I needed to it and even collected another one that I bought on ebay!!.. then the load was packaged up and delivered to a freight depot to come to me!!!
Thanks Guys!!!
now those parts are on the way, Im very excited, three projects to get thumping on at once!!!!!..

Nah, he wouldnt have had more than 10 maybe, but the spare parts for them are allegedly hard to get so I left them there,:twisted:
Last I saw he was placing them in a line in front of his header tyres. to see how many he could jump....
and back to reality.... yep again Im in "BOBCAT mode" (a happy little digger!) and he reckons he has the drivers side door top there somewhere, he knows because he sat it next to the window glass and plastic he took out of it before!! when he finds it (and whatever else) he'll give me a call to take a trip out there..... he thinks the mirrors (guard mounted round mirrors) may have been thrown out in a recent clean up, "but they were both cracked"

No...who the heck is that??
Theres Hagar....
but I had a "yotota rollux" (dual cab) for a fair while and my mum thought it was a terrible "ute thingy" (it was in good nick too until we rolled it up past oodnadatta one holiday - bloody bulldust roads!!)
anyway she named my cars. She looked at the thing and said "thats horrible" so it became "HORRIE".. and was known as horrie from that day forth...to everyone..
(I also had tommy toyota (73 fj40) and larry landcruiser (78 fj40) before I left the dark side and got Larry land rover (96 defender 110)...
anyway out of the previous names this one sprang to mind when Nay saw what I had when I came in and said "It followed me home can I keep it?" pointing to HORRIE on a trailer behind my ..work:o..car....!

Question:-
I have found and refitted the horn button and arm, it still has about 1' of wiring attached, so reaches to about the side of the "dash pod area"...
I have a total of about 8 horns to choose from, that done.... how does the wiring go (via what route, to what relay etc etc) to the horn which is located where??? It appears these havent been fitted for a very long time...
The wiring diagram doesnt help me.... After descriptions and photos please people, pop the bonnet, fire up that old cube flash kodak and lets see it...........please?
While Im at it --6.50/16's as per original size or 7.50/16's as per bigger tyres, pros and cons please?
cheers

Hi Digger,
My experience with Landy tyres over 40 years:
I found 6.00 way too small and 7.50 too big unless you want it to look like a monster truck. 6.50 are the original and look good but my personal preference is for 7.00 crossply which look chunky. If you go to my thread of a couple of weeks ago (57662054 - Matilda the second) you can see what they look like on the vehicle. The one on the bonnet is new.
You need to decide on radials or crossplies as they can't be mixed. Radial last longer on bitumen and are much quieter on bitumen but take them into the desert and you'll tear the sidewalls in short order. The originals were crossplies (bias ply) which are tougher with better grip off road but wear quickly and are noisy on bitumen.
Best value crossplies are Otani (on the bonnet) or MRF from a very good factory in India. Any good tyre dealer can get them for you, about $185 each. If not, message me for the websites. If you want Firestones they are expensive from Classic Tyres in Melbourne.
Good luck, Paul:)

No wuckers. ;)
Should make for an interesting read... he was perhaps most famous for leading nine M113s on a charge during Tet '68.
Of course, I'm just spouting the history book. All of this happened well before I was born.
Most of my exposure to his work has been that of his later (up to retirement) efforts in civvy street. ;)

Ha ha - that was to test if you were paying attention - well not really but it is a good excuse for how it snuck in. Disregard it - I managed to get some pics of the engine bay of my swb station wagon mixed up the the basic 88 pics on my computer. The basic is original but the station wagon has a few mods - like a siamese engine instead of a spreadbore:mad: .

now back to it,,, I have a bundle of questions... starting one at a time!!!
A) Does anyone have the +/- dash female plugs that they dont want ?
(theyve been ripped out of this one!)
B) From the horn button I have about 1' of wiring and two joiners on end,
1*-where does this wiring go- how is it held?,
2*-where does it pass through the firewall?
3*-do the wires join into the circular bakelite junction box near the steering box?
4*-I assume there should be a horn relay,...whats it look like, wheres it go?
(aluminium topped 'box' on firewall?) & if so how?
the horn is now painted and dangling from the pass side bonnet hinge bolts..
it gives an attempt when direct to battery obviously needs relay...
also have rear windows now (well... clear perspex panels, ;) need some chrome trim for the meeting edge of them but thatll be later! (where from?) ) have two side sliding panel size bits cut for the doors ready... also have to cut some "handle" squares out to attach to windows.
I still dont have a magnatex for this one - appears had the old lifting arm "trafficators" previously fitted, (no bits left but holes all along the horn arm edge apparently is how they used to mount them..)
no wiring to rear tray that I can see, but maybe travels internally?
5*- handbrake appears to operate but wont 'catch', have a spare but cannot get "button" to unscrew from one currently in the car to go on this replacement one....is there some trick to this (or do I need more weeties in the morings? :o )
Need to get hoses done for brakes, as a standard 56 109 is there anything I should know? I only saw three hoses when I had a quick look today... only 1 flexible hose at rear???
SEATS. got 2 (blue) how common was a third (middle) seat and how different were they in construction?
*-is internal frame of seats easy to make from scratch?
*-does anyone have a "pattern" for the frames, I think I saw a pattern
for the material covering....
*-can the seat back also be reasonably easily made (except the
brackets obviously!)
they'll be lots more questions.... if you can help with answers / photos / diagrams etc all would be much appreciated....

I've got a spare set of power sockets, but they're from a Rangie.
I think the early stuff had pins the same size, whereas later models had one pin fatter, so you couldn't reverse the polarity.
If you want them, I'll bring them to the BBQ as well.;)

1, 2, 3, 4. Horn wiring goes through the firewall alongside the steering column, and is held by a plastic or rubber tie round the column. It goes to the junction box. No Series Landrover had a horn relay.
Trim on edge of rear windows I think is aluminium not chrome.
No turn indicators would have been fitted originally (unless it came into Australia second hand), as these were not a legal substitute for hand signals when this was built. After these became legal to use about 1958 it is likely that one of a wide variety of aftermarket indicators would have been fitted.
Wiring to the rear is internal to the chassis, RH chassis rail from memory.
I don't think there is a trick to the handbrake knob.
There are three brake hoses - check the threads on them, but I think they will be UNF same as the Series 2/2a.
All (or almost all) Series Landrovers had three seats across the front. Seats are of similar construction but I suspect the middle one is a different width to the other two - this is the case on the Series 2/2a/3.
Can't help with the rest of the seat questions (I don't have a Series 1 and it is a long time since I owned one).
Hope this helps.

Regarding seats - I have just bought a set of seats from exmoor trim in the UK , they were complette (in red trim and for the firefly)
They worked out cheaper than I could get done locally ......
Might be worth getting a price..............

Digger, I made new seat bases for our S1 88" (same for 86/107/109)and I'm sure I made a drawing of the frame. I'll have a look and see if I can find it. We then had them recovered for $100 each by a local trimmer. He did use the old dunlopillo cushions.

gday,
just to update...
i asked a bloke about one just after i got my 109...and he has rung me back this morning...but i need to take the whole cab... (not a problem really) and he says I may need to "refabricate" some of the tropical roof panel if I want it in really good nick.... that said, if I get it, Ill dismantle and measure everything and you can knock up your own?!
I have bought and collected the cab... will post photos when I get a chance.
will take photos, measurements etc etc when I can...
*(this whole cab will go on my s1 (STILL UNNAMED) 109.

when I got the above cab I also collected the "bench seat back" that came with it! (he was gonna throw it!)
it is a single piece back that fits into holes in seat brackets in vehicle already and then is secured with small slide bolts on cab rear wall...

The one piece back was part of the deluxe pack introduced for the 107 when released (it was only available as a utility and later stationwagon). I'm not sure how many 107 and S1 109 utes here had it, but probably not uncommon among them. Smith's book implies it later became available for other models, but I have never seen it except in the lwb ute.
The padding would be Dunlopillo.

Thanks JD, thanks everyone...I thought it looked too well made to be a straight shonky (sorry shonks!) or bodged up job... glad I grabbed it now!
At the moment im thinking of getting it recovered the same time when I get the seats etc for the "oldie" redone... and Im thinking of fitting the basic slidebolt securing mechanisms for the top/sides into the cab so I have both options, the little seat backs and the bench seat back. Only have two seats so seems overkill in the middle!, also gets in the way of the gun rack!!
more importantly, having problems with getting any response to starter button etc at the moment, battery is charged, but nothing happens on starter push....get sparks when I bridge starter bolts so there is power...
will have a "play about" and see what I can manage!...(frustrating though because it was running beaut only 2 weeks ago!) may need to get my multimeter working!
still lots (and lots and lots) to do on it...
still havent come up with a name....
and hoping to get a surge on all my projects after xmas and new year!

Something I'll just point out, note the angle of join between side supports (the ones placed under the canopy,) and second roof skin... this angle obviously makes the shape contour to the body/roof lines...

not much has happened to the s1, still trying to get approval from relative govt bodies to subdivide a house block off a farm so we can get it!!
I have been getting advice re: wiring looms and who to use via a source I would consider very expert, so I sent an email off to this mob....
" vintagecarparts.co.uk " and they seem really good.
They sent the attached Excel doc. with looms and prices, starts at s1 & just keeps going!!...
also there was this "speel" explaining the excel doc.
'Digger" , thankyou for your enquiry this is the explanation for the product list as I promised.
reading columns:
column B - loom reference number
column C - total number of cable pieces in loom, this includes odd pieces off the main loom, but does not include the cables up the steer column stator tube nor the battery to starter heavy leads which is NOT included in the loom anyway.
column D - finish - B is cotton braid
- P is plastic PVC. the outer is braided or taped, and the cables are colour coded to original colours.
thus BB is colour coded cotton braid cables with braided outer binding. PB is colour coded pvc cables with braided outer binding.
PP is colour coded pvc cables with plastic taped outer binding
column E - our understanding of the year coverage of the item
column F and G - model reference name
column H - identifying features apparent to distinguish different patterns
column I - price of item. this is subject to carriage and VAT is applicable within EU.
if the listing is for a BB loom as standard, a PB loom can be supplied at a saving of 10% on the price shown.
most looms are made to order, however some popular looms are made in batches and sometimes available from stock. it is assumed that looms
are made 'as standard' as though the vehicle has been despatched from works originally. however modifications always included are that
headlamps are both dipping (against early one dips on solenoid and other goes out) and brake lights are included.
additional costs commonly sought are adding flashers to each corner - typical cost additional £10.00 to cost, however you will be
questioned by us on where the switch and flasher unit etc is to be fitted before we proceed on manufacture.
additional wires normally to rear for high intensity rears or reversing lamp can be incorporated at additional cost
if a vehicle was originally 6 volt, there is no problem at all in fitting these looms to 12 volt systems. similarly conversion from
Negative or Positive earth.
on later vehicles conversion from dynamo to alternator can be incorporated at additional cost on individual request.
please note that we do not become involved with sound system wires etc incorporated at all.
postage approx £25

He, an experienced owner of many MG's with similar pumps then said the following.
Peter, you pump has to "suck" the fuel and if the pipe is any way obstructed it wont 'suck'.
I removed the pipes from the pump and the glass filter and blew them out with compressed air.
Refitted pipes and pump has been working faithfully ever since.

Digger,
its most important to blow out the pipe from the glass filter to the fuel tank.
If it has the very slightest obstruction or partial blockage of gunk or other, it will not suck .
No matter what you do it wont work and consequently not SUCK.
I recommend that you check this first, along with blowing out the rest of the fuel lines.

I've had one of these come into my possession.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2012/01/474.jpg
It's a large oval shaped spotlight, heavy, chrome, blue spot light
It is marked 'NOTEK" at the top of the chrome facia and 'ROAD MASTER" on the top of the glass.

and has british patent detail on back

It has a 6v large globe in it at the moment, I think it would look good on the S1 (if I ever find a tray!) and am wondering if I can just swap globes or is it
likely to be more involved than that?
Or is it something better kept for a 6v vehicle? (I have no idea what year this would be but tend to think 40-50's?)

I can't find much history etc about them at all...:(
anyone know anything or have any comments about them it would be appreciated. :D

I dont think it would be a spotlight. More of a flood or spreadbeam looking at the fluting of the lense.

Hi there Digger
I will ask - just in case
as for
Everything about your place stopped smelling of burnt scrub yet
Burnt alot of land 8500ha - and without the rain it may have burnt twice that.
Did you think about turning out your fleet of trucks to help
I spend 5 days on the fire ground, as no one was home as a precaution Melenee did move the animals (thought it strange she didnt move my toys).
Approx 300 fire fighter and 7 water bombers - and on the Friday the planes did 176 water drops as it was racing through the pass before hitting town - but we stopped it on the heysen trail (back burning at night).
All the best
Wayne
