View Full Version : Vacuum pump question

Hi Guys.
The Vacuum pump on my Series 1 discovery has shuffled off this mortal coil.
Mechanic is offering a genuine one for about $1100, a non genuine for roughly $600. On the other hand I think I can get one from rover parts for about $380 (by the time I allow for freight)
Any reason to go the genuine one over the others?
Anyone had one from roverparts who can report on it?
Any other advice?
Thanks
Andrew

Hi Andrew,
As far as I know they are only made by Wabco, so should all be the same. Others will correct me on this if I'm wrong.
So, I'd go for the best price you can find. $1100 is a total rip-off.

Bought one from Peninsula Rangie in Seaford (Melb.) in June this year for $372.90. Damien is your man.

Try repairing it first or buy from the UK and take advantage of the exchange rate. 79.99 GBP less VAT so should get it here for $200 AUD.

mmm in my mind false economy. Just like buying the kits for Master brake and clutch cylinders. There is a reason the seals went in the first place , which is normal scared surfaces due to wear ,and these will cause the new seals to go in no time as well. You may as well get a whole new unit and replace and the forget about it. Rather than being back there in 6 months doing it again .

Andrew, what is the matter with the one you have?
If it is only an oil leak, Langy's sticky is a fair repair. I have done the same thing on several occasions and the result has been good.
The only thing to watch is the hardening on the toe of the operating rod. And if the thing is not producing vacuum, that indicates a valve failure and AFAIK the valves are not serviced separately.
HTH before you spend $300+ on replacement instead of $10 on a simple repair.

Mine went at Dubbo whilst on a trip to Perth in August this year. The bottom welsch plug spun around causing a horrible noise and oil to dribble out. The bottom valve had destroyed itself and got wedged between the end cover and the piston causing the rivets to stretch. Drilled out the rivets and removed the broken valve pieces and replaced the rivets with bolts and nyloc nuts. Refitted the welsch plug with loctite around it to stop it coming back out. This fix worked fine to get me to Perth and back and was still working fine when I replaced it, but I had the money for a replacement anyway. I have kept the repaired unit as a backup for future use. Cost was just over $400 including freight from memory. Purchased from Adelaide and had it sent to Perth where I picked it up and then transported it back from WA in case I needed it (the trip was done on the rebuilt unit). Was quoted over $1100 for the same thing from the dealer in Dubbo. Replacement is a Wabco same as the unit that failed. Can't hurt to try rebuilding it, or you can have my old one if you want to cover freight.

Thanks for the offer Warren, but I'll go for a replacement one. :-)
I'm not inclined to repair/rebuild as I've not had a lot of luck with this sort of thing over time.
Thanks

Mine went in Bendigo on Boxing Day last year. Made towing the camper trailer interesting and impossible for the wife!
Next day rang LR and $1100 odd and had to go to main warehouse at a 30 min interval or nothing till January.
Rang Rover parts, said i was from AULRO and had one for a bargain around a quarter of the above and yes they were open all day. it was Wabco same as original. Fitted in the carpark and all good!
Excellent service, even offered to help install!
