View Full Version : Does your D3 whistle above 50kph? Think it's the roof rails...

Hi everyone
Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what you have done about it.
I have noticed that as soon as our D3 ventures above 50 km, I get this high pitched whistling sound happenning. I'm guessing it's the wind going through the roof rails as there haven't been any windows partially open.
Has anyone else experienced this? If so, did you have to take the roof rails off, or was there an easier fix?
Thanks in advance.

What sort of rails do you have fitted?
There have been a few reports of the A pillar trims creating a bit of noise in the past.

Give the plastic covers over the windscreen pillars a good thump, these are a clip on affair and can whistle. (as mentioned above)

Scouse - I just went out and tried to find a label on the rails and I can't see one. They came with the car which is 2nd hand.
Actually I hadn't realised it, but the racks are screwed onto the rails as well, so maybe it's the wind going through those *doh*. The racks are LR ones.
Tote - I will check out the windscreen pillars too as you have suggested.
Thanks for your ideas guys. It's a really annoying sound when it gets going.

If the rails are moveable shift them as far back as they go.
It may also be induction noise from a snorkel if fitted.
x2 re the A-pillar trim.
Or it could just be your D3 is happy. When you fit the pink seat covers it'll stop whistling and start whining.

If the cross bars have an internal channel check that you have all the rubber inserts/strips in.
I have Thule bars and had the same problem, was driving me mad but once I put the rubber strips back the whistle stopped.
Still have some noise just not that whistle.
Still try the pink seat covers as a good disco is a happy disco.

Mine whistled as well with the Thule cross bars, its beter if the bars are further back as the step in the roof really upsets the flow over the roof...
as much as it can for a 2.7T brick doing 100 (or so).....
Cheers,
AP.

Just popped in to tell you the upshot - the rubber strips had been taken out. We put them back in and ... ta daaa ... all the noise stopped. Yay!
Thanks guys for helping us find the answer :D.
