Hey guys, just about to fork out some big dollars on giving my rangie a new heart, thinking a new 5L Rover V8 from Davis Performance Landys.
They are expecting 40% power gains over current.:D
www.davisperformance.com (http://www.davisperformance.com)
Should i go for it, or does someone have a better idea?

A new 4.6 would be lots cheaper.
And do you also have the 3K to upgrade the probably by now tired ZF?
I have a friend who has one of the 5Ls and is relatively happy but Bruce recommended the 3K ZF upgrade to him as a minimum with a 7K upgrade recommended.(according to my friend)

Cant help with that one but you sure could stick something wild in for that dosh... It wont end there though as the drive line will have to be uprated to cope.:( Are you blackrangie from the 4WD action forum?

sounds steep but, graeme cooper quoted around 11k just for a 4.6 built up from a doner block, nothing special.
everywhere seems to want 10k for a 4.6 install, drive in/out.
Seems like a lot,but a good engine will put your resale up a fair bit when(and a big if) i ever sell.
Any better options?

I don't think it would add anywhere near as much value as it would cost.
How about a 355 Holden V8?

What happened to the stroker? Diffs are the least of your worries.;) I can assure you the ZF 4HP22 will hate the 5ltr. Costly but you can put HP24 guts in them or just use the complete 4HP24ES with a compushift.
If you have a search you will find I have a made little progress but have a few interesting extras for mine:angel:

There is a 91 Rangie on ebay for 33k,has a ton of goodies though, worth the money but may be on there for a while until someone realizes its value.
Fairly keen to keep it rover, for various reasons

Stroker, well I'm skeptical it ever was,it was sold to me as a 4.2 stroker with the car, but it doesn't drive as one,had it checked out heaps, but never had heads off.
hmm, interesting, what years does the 4HP24ES come out of,can u put the compushift up high and it not be effected by water,or is it best to use the internals on a 4HP22? approx cost?

I was gonna jump in and say go for it and dont think about it just do it. but **** 11k
I recently looked at the 5L option and I got upto about 7k costing. I either missed something or it's costing 4k to do all the labour.
Also dont be thinking that a new engine is gonna raise the value all that much, that rangie you speak of is not worth that much, its just a pretty motor in an old vehicle.
If your even thinkin about resale values, then I would say its not in your best interest. But hey I have no problems with it if you do. :)

Im thinking of doing up the whole car, maybe even paint, give it a new lease on life. Not really thinking of re sale, just pointing out that it will be more valuable if and when i ever do sell, i realize you never make money on cars.
so what would be included in your 7k ?

short block, heads, cam lifters etc etc. No allowance for other ancillaries as I was hoping to re-use my originals. No allowance for labour as all was to be done at home with mates over a couple of weekends and lots of beers :)
I did have a paper list of bit and rough part calculations. But who knows what happened to that.
I had a thread up not long ago I should try find it as i may have had more info hidden in there.

Hey mate
Try giving TRS a call in SA.
They sell many 4.6 and some with high compression too.
I bought 2 there with great results and if sticking to a 4.6 with say a Haltech system, you will find the box will cope and you get great performance that will be reliable and come in way under the $11k.
Good luck either way but resale will not go up by much as the buyer pretty well expects a car with motor, that it is a stonker is just a bonus.

Can you move the computer up behind the usless right vent in the dash? Should fit on the lower cowling nicely. Then the deep water wont bother you at all:)

A few things worry me with that setup. looms along the hot floor, Nothing is ever 100% water tight unless epoxy is involved, heat to the ecu, a bastard to get at.
He obviously knows what he is doing though:)
Well bugger it I'm still sticking my ecu and control relays up in the dash with little waterproofing other than silicone spray. If I get that much water on board I'll have other problems:twisted:
It can happen... We took a few inches of water in at Morton island just playing in a water hole:eek: I was damn lucky the ecu didn't chuck it in.

My ecu still sits on the floor undernearth driver seat , I have pretty much sealed the entire rangie floor , metal plates cut and rivotted with lots of sikaflex  driven thru a few bog holes already and the carpet and trim has stayed dry .but as Tony has hinted you would probably want to tidy up the wiring loom laying on the floor around the transmission pan, does get quite hot there.

That winch appears to be only grafted into the bar. Will it be strong enough like that?
Look into the wheel carrier as I seen some that flex to much.
Your making great progress with it now:cool:
I need to do a fair bit to catch up now:angel: May have to put twin snorkels and Rangie sport guard vents in to make mine a bit different

Kurmit has assured me that the inside has been reinforced with thick plate metal and so on,and he has raced a rangie with a setup just like mine but with a much more powerful winch, so I'm sure it will be fine ;).
He says thats how they do it all the time now because most rangies have the non winch bar already, they just mod them to suit, problem solved.
Rear swing away will be an LRA item from memory.

Do you know who modified the rims? I have a set that I would like offset changed and modified for tubeless tyres.
Eastern wheel works (vic) is who your after, not to far from Rangie Automotive.
I'm getting mine pulled in 1-1.5 inches by them on next week to improve steering.
From memory my 15x10's are 6inches out 4 inches in.
Trying to make my steering as safe as it can be with 2.5inch suspension lift,15x10's and 33 muds.
Swivels have Castor correction, all joints and rubbers are tight, now just want to bring the wheels in a touch, they say the steering will improve.
Any one else had success with a certain offset with 15x10's?
will let you know how pulling them in a bit helps, want to find the sweet spot between stability, steering and inner guard clearance;)

I will have to give them a call and see what they can do.

So my 15x10's i originally got made for stability and looks are 6inches out/4inches in
The 15x8's with -25mm would be how many inches out/in?
the standard 17x6 rims would be how many inches out/in?
