Air Suspension Pump

A question for all you P38 owners, When the pump for your air suspension kicks in, 1) Can you hear it operating and 2) Does it noticeably vibrate the whole car?

Problem is, I have had the pump and the valve block refurbished and ever since this time when the pump kicks in it does the for mentioned vibrations and noise. It has been back 3 times now, first time the plastic mounting box was blamed and replaced, which didn't fix it, then it went back and a faulty pump was blamed but it still does it!! This is driving me crazy and I keep getting told that it is fixed but it still vibrates the hell out of the car. Guess it will have to go back yet again.

Generally noticeable vibration is due to incorrect mounting of the compressor. Undo the three nylock nuts and check to ensure that the rubber mounts are sandwiched between the convex sides of the cup shaped washers. Make sure the insulators are properly seated. The important thing is not to overtighten the mounts. The compressor should be able to vibrate away happily, totally isolated through its suspension on the rubber mounts with noo vibration reaching the rest of the vehicle.
If the mounts are U/S, Airbag Man (Brendale, Qld) can supply new ones.

Will go out and check these mounts today, I was told that new mounts were put in - Hmmm maybe not!!

Ahh. That's the answer. When they pulled it apart, they reassembled it without adjusting the rear compressor mount.

Undo the three nuts and lift the compressor. It should slide easily with no drag from the mounts. If it doesn't, the whole EAS box and dice needs to be removed so you can access the two allen head cap screws holding the rear mount and driver pack. Access is through a slot in the side of the plastic EAS box (the mudguard side of the box).

Loosne the capscrews to allow the rear bracket to move. Align the compressor (mounting nuts removed), the retighten the capscrews. See pics.

Put it all back in the car.

It's an easy job.
