Traction Control query?

G'day,

Just watched this vid and have a question. They claim traction control is on and diffs are open on the Disco. I thought traction control was meant to 'instantly' stop the spinning wheel so drive could be transferred to the wheel with grip, so why in this video do the wheels spin for so long?

That is normal operation. Your assumption that traction control instantly stops a spinning wheel is incorrect.

thats working correctly.

when the wheels are spinning quickly (remember the spinning wheel goes at twice the normal speed) you cant see the TC doing its thing. It doesnt stop the wheel but it slows it down and this transmist some of the torque through the open diff to the wheels on the ground, you can see at 1:12 when hes not just trying to spin his way forwards that the wheel "stutters" and the Vehicle proceeds. Think of it as ABS backwards (cause thats what it is) and you're on the right track. with practice you can do the same thing on a vehicle without TC and its easier to learn on something with drum brakes that feature self engergisation (which is all series in the forwards direction)

Hes not helped by the fact that it looks like hes either not got CDL or he hasnt engaged it and is trying to demonstrate that it works rather than using a better driving technique

That's a problem with the D2. It takes a fair bit of revs to get the TC to cut in.
It's much better on the Defender & even better on the D3.

Not quite true tbh, the defender always had a CDL from the factory, so those with TC had programing to transfer power across the axles, where as the D2 with no CDL can transfer back to front as well...add the CDL to the D2 and its a far better system. Cannot speek for the D3 as Not driven one.

First off that is a post 03MY D2 so it will have CDL. Look at the lights.

Second as mentioned TC looked to be working correctly.

Thirdly the longer wheel base of the D2 would help get over that hump anyway.

Yep, exactly what I thought. Though I am a bit biased in the Jeep department anyway.
