Hi all,

just wondering if a defender front end will bolt straight in to a county ?

Which is typically stronger in terms of cvs and general wear and tear?

county and very early defender is the strongs but also commonly the most worn.

should be a straight swap for the fronts.

I was always told that the stronger cvs etc, were 83-87 countys? or were they the same up to the late 200tdi update?

Oliver, a defender front end will fit pre 94 no problem, or a 94-99 one if you swap the trailing arms too.

How much of the front end are you going to swap and what year defender? some differences may be,trailing arms(as andrew e sayes) vented discs(you nead the defender calipers or the spacers from the defender calipers),I'm not sure if defenders have fine spline diff centres countys have 10 spline so different axles for county cv to fine spline centre, number of bolts swivel housing to diff.

When Mal Story fitted the Maxidrives to my then brand new 1992 Defender 110 HP Cab Chassis he changed the CV's to County ones. He mentioned that the Army also had discovered that their 110's were fitted with the lighter version cv and that Landrover had replaced them under warranty.

thanks for the input guys.

I am asking as I would like to replace the county front end under my s2b with a bolt in item.

I noticed the defender front and rears with lockers in the classifieds and this got me thinking....

My front end is very early county.

there was some runout of some remaining county stuff that made it into the early defenders. Im not sure exactly how far it got or if they were parts that were replaced as part of repairs using old county stock.

what your after should be a bolt in bolt out job or very close to it.

Check the width of the radius arms on the defender, I put my county guts into a disco houseing after altering the geomerty of the front end with a big rock. The disco had radius arms aprox 10mm wider which didn't matter since I had the radius arm. The countys had the strongest driveling in all the 110's except for the 10 spline on the diff end of the axles which was changed in 94

The radius arm bushes at the axle end are wider on the defender than county. So the radius arms are also wider. I think you would also need to change the radius arms.

Rovertech in Perth did a fair bit of work on my 110 including replacing the cv's.
They advised that the county cv's were heavier/better than defender and use them in the replacement, it was a straight swap as far as I know.:D
