Hi everyone
Just out of curiosity i run a 96 tdi and have noticed it is a bit noisier than other defender tdi's i know of. It is running the zeus timing gear and wondered whether it could be this. Generally speaking it seems to be a bit knockier. Other than the noise it all drives fine. Has been like this no quiter or louder for the last 30000km so not particularly concerned just curious.
Thanks
Josh

I've not seen a Tdi with the Zeus gears in the flesh, but as there is now gear to gear contact instead of the rubber belt, I would expect slightly more noise from the gears.

Having said that, there are many other things that may be contributing to your slightly louder engine, such as adjustment of the valves, oil type and brand etc, and just general wear in most components.

Josh,
I heard your fender a couple of weeks back when h moved it...
I reckon if the tappets are good and valve stem lash caps are good, Id pull the injectors and get Cairns Deisel to run em through the test bench. They will only test the crack pressure but Ive heard the same sorta noise from dribbling injectors.
It doesnt sound like gear noise to me?

IRC that many people who fitted the zeus gears noticed an increase in noise after fitment.

Ben,
its a very tappetty / top end noise not a gear growl.
Can hear it at tickover.

Getting injectors out is easy josh, just remove the bonnet, remove injector clamps, remove the fuel rail and turn it over... then go and find the injectors in the neighbours back yard!!!!!! ;)

Tis easy enough, prob check the tappets and lash caps first though?
