I would like to know if it is possible to fit a auto to a new or near new defender. My wife cant negotiate a manual and would be interested if it is worthwhile selling my S2 Disco auto seven seater for a 7 seater defender.
I would expect a TD5 disco box would fit, but with a different chassis, what problems and expected cost would i need to consider.

Im trying to drop from 2 Landies and a toyota people mover and m/bike and caravan down to 2 Landies, motor bike and caravan.
I really do like the Defender and with fwd facing seats makes a great option over the old side facing benches

Cheers and Thanks

Not sure what is involved particularly, but Davis Performance Landies has an auto 90. Perhaps give them a call.

I'm not sure that I'd try with a TD5 auto due to the electronic controls. You may be better off with a Tdi box and the bits to make it join to the TD5 (Bellhousing, TC etc)

I'm pretty sure Ashcroft sell conversion parts such as consoles etc.

There is a mob in Brisbane that will do it on the current Defender but it is very expensive, I can't remember their name but I contacted them via email & they were very helpful.
Price was about $12K from memory as they had to custom make adaptor for transmission.

They can do Td5 engined Defenders far more reasonably as they just take the transmission from a D2.

I believe Les Richmond in Melbourne has also done this conversion.

Hi,

we convert lots of Defenders to auto and also supply complete conversion kits for the TD5 and the newer 2.4 tdci,

lots of reading here :

Ashcroft Transmissions (http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/category_15.html)

and on the compushift here, you won't want a hydraulic auto once you have driven the electronic zf with the compushift :

Dave,

I think you may be the same Dave I emailed earlier in the year??

Do you know anyone in AUS that would do the compushift job. (Preferably Melbourne) . Looks great and, I am told, very flexible.

I am interested in doing my Td5 90.

Is it possible to buy a new Defender with a V8 from the factory?

Does LR/ RR still make manual V8s?

You'd have to check the NZ situation but not in Australia.

There is no manual option available in the Range Rover and hasnt been for some time. Why would you bother ? They'd sell almost exactly none of them!
