I appear to have two pumps located side by side. When I turn the ignition on these tick away faily quickly and continue to tick at that rate, even when there is plenty of pressure. Is that normal? Is two pumps standard for the V8s. (My other Brit piece has a single pump which stops ticking once pressure is attained and then ticks occasionally as the pressure drops after the engine starts).

I've only got 1 pump ('85 County).

Maybe two will reduce the risk of fuel starvation when climbing up steep inclines? Just guessing.

Thanks for the reply. I took a picture. I imagine you are right. The original owner wanted to tramp the deserts, so that probably explains why I have two...and an extra filter I suspect. There is a filter in the engine compartment as well as the one in the pic. Belts and braces eh?

Can I ask you another question. Are you able to open the (black) vents beneath the windscreen on your County. Mine appear not to be openable.

It is normal to have two pumps if you have two tanks, day tank plus a long range tank in the rear. Usually if that is the case you should also have a switch on the dash to switch between them. If you don't have two tanks now perhaps there were once? In either case you should not have both pumps running at the same time. Are they both plumbed in? If they are I'd disconnect one of them (keep it as a spare).

It is normal for the pump to continue at the same rate and it is also not unusual for there to be two petrol filters, one attached to the firewall and one near the pump.

Do you have air con in your county?... I'm pretty sure if you have aircon, those vents arnt supposed to open.....

Someone else might be able to verify this..:)

Yes I do have A/C.....so that may be the story. At some stage I will have to take the dash apart and I will see what the story really is then.

Most Counties - no you can't open the vents. It's a consequence of the attempt to put aircon in. I think there are threads on aulro about how to reverse this bad decision by L-R.

Just to make you envious, my County DOES have the traditional vents (and passenger-knees position aircon which I need to fix up). I picked a winner there.

The V8's use a fuel return system which is why the pump keeps going- its circulating fuel back to the tank once the bowls are full. The tone will change slightly when the float bowls fill.

Some vehicles dont have a fuel return line hence the pump stops when the needle valve in the carb closes.
