Hi Everyone

I am looking to fit a (bearmach or Mantec) rear wheel carrier with genuine lamp guards but I cant quite work out if they foul on each other, as you can see I've added some pics of the guards and the red defender is the mantec style, the white is the bearmach type so it looks like the bearmach type will foul on the lamp guard can anyone confirm this from experience ..

Cheers

Looking at the pictures and looking at the back of my Puma I would say yes it will fowl. The carrier's hinge sites to the right of the lower door hinge where the lamp guard covers in those pictures.

Thanks DM

So it looks like bearmach one will definitely hit but mantec type will be ok.

Just got a Quote back from singapore for the mantec type of $566 posted to perth.

Have a look at the wheel carrier this German site. It looks very good.

Reserveradträger NEU Defender ab MY 2002 - Artikeldetailansicht - Nakatanenga 4x4-Equipment für Land Rover & Outdoor (http://nakatanenga-tours.de/shop/article_RRHNAHI/Reserveradträger-NEU-Defender-ab-MY-2002.html'shop_param=cid%3D4%26aid%3DRRHNAHI%26)

Site is in German.

Who's your Singapore contact as that would be a possible cheap place for me to get stuff from too.

Hmmm not much of a website do they have a catalogue or anything?

Unfortunately no catalog but by sounds of it you get most mantec items.

I will email them again and see if they do a list or catalog.

Thanks for that singapore contact, I may also try them for some mantec goodies as postage to Darwin may not be so bad. Worth a try at least. I want to get a Mantec spare wheel carrier at some stage.....

Hi there, a while ago I have also thought of fitting a Mantec spare wheel carrier to my new Defender, but in the end decided on fitting the one from Australian Kaymar. And I do not regret it! The Kaymar carrier does not require any holes drilling in the rear panel, as it is fully supported on the chassis of the car. I think that is a big plus. Nothing wrong with the Mantec, but after having fit this Kaymar model, I think it is safe to say that the Kaymar is the sturdiest of all those wheel carriers. Only drawback in case of a stationwagon model is that it does open separate from the rear door, first the wheel carrier, then the door, but I find that not to be a problem. The only real disadvantage of the Kaymar vs. the Mantec is......$$$$$$, at least here in Switzerland. Still can recommend it though. Good luck, Eric

Thanks for the Pic ericvv,

Agree that is one awsome looking svx.
Yes I should probably think more about it, I prefer the mantec for that reason that it opens with the door and they seem of a better quality that the benach wheel carriers.
I know my wife would probably get anoyed at opening a carrier then a door........

First off the Kaymar is about $1000 here and it's made here in Australia:eek:

Secondly, having had a Kaymar on a D1, I can tell you it gets very annoying having to open the wheel carrier then the door. Especially when there is monsoonal rain falling:(

I'd love to hear from someone who has the German wheel carrier fitted. The Bearmach, Mantec etc are all very similar.

+1 They also get annoying when you are parked on a slope.. and want to keep closing onto you.

The carrier that I have is cal and does not look as good but it opens with the door and locks open, so it will told the door open for you when you are parked on a slope (or stuck at an angle in a river trying to get out the recovery gear and not loose your balance and fall in the water..... :wasntme: )

The other thing to look out for is whether or not you can open the door with the key in it. With the graham cooper ones if you open the door with the key in the lock it will smash the key on the spare.. which is a pretty annoying thing to happen as part of it will break off in the lock!

Unfortunately the one on my county has no brand that I can see but it is a professional job, and I have seen them around.

I finally finished my own wheel carrier which has the following features.........opens with the door, locks in the open position and doesn't need any holes drilled to install it. IMHO some of the commercially made carriers look a bit 'light duty'. Maybe they're not made with Aussie Outback corrugated roads in mind.

Cheers, Murray

More to the point, why would they bother with a web site. Has basically zero info on it.

nam seng is a bit of a one man show actually... large(ish) warehouse, 3 stories high, 5 meters wide and 30 metres deep!

last time I was there I sat on a pair of Zu rims because there was no space for a chair in the "office" :)

if you are shipping stuff from SG to Darwin, try Perkins as they run a vessel from SG to Darwin a couple of times a week basically empty and would do the freight as a type of back loading I'd say...

:Rolling:
You obviously haven't dealt with Perkins:(

At a guess I wouldn't be surprised if the shipping to Darwin was less than they would charge to on ship it to Gove.

I love the handle to lift the pin in the carrier. I have been trying to think of a modification like that to my Kaymar as the pin is a pain.

I have had some dealings with them, but only SG - Darwin... got a quote on shipping a 90 with gear in a container 4-5 years back I think.
