Dog was barking so went out into the front yard to investigate and found this little fella feasting on ants by our front door, he dug himself a nice little burrow and waited till dark before he moved on. Kids wanted to pick it up and bring it inside .

Cute, if the kids hang long anough without making much noise, they'll be able to give him a pat on the nose:)

Well, maybe you can go wait patiently and give him a nose scratch:)

They'd soon learn how hard it is to just pick up a echidna
Hi,
Dead easy, gently push on his right shoulder, and he pops his left hind leg out to balance.
Pick him up easily, and point his 'nervous' end away from you for a bit.
The spines can cause an itch for an hour or so if they break the skin, so gloves are handy.
The mainland echidnas have much longer spines that the Tasmanian ones though.
cheers

Aww...

I clipped one of them on a dirt road a few weeks ago. :( I got out and checked and it seemed okay (a little shocked though) so I think he just copped a nudge from the sidewall and a big scare.

I hope he/she/it was okay. :(
