I have one in my FC. took out the turbo 700 and replaced it with a 4L80eas my truck weighs over 4 tons.
I may sell the 700 , it bolts straight up to the diesel.

Hi 123rover50.
Any chance that your FC was owned by a WA South Coast Salmon fisherman???

No I built it in 2000, on a 6x6 Perentie chassis.

been there done that, don't waste your money, there are much better options out there! big, heavy, slow, way under powered to size, you'd think for 6.5litres it would go like stink, but no, they do go ok but not what you'd expect.
I'm going from 6.5litre chev V8 diesel, to 3.9l isuzu turbo and intercooled diesel. from my experience the isuzu goes better, more drivable, way better economy, and just more enjoyable to drive.

When I had the exhaust sytem made for my "Toy"at Tyrepower in Collie, there was a FC the owner was building for his brother or BIL who was a Salmon Fisherman on the South Coast of WA.It had a Brunswick Chev TurboDiesel and auto plus PTO tipper. This guy did all the Brunswick Diesel conversion exhaust work at the time.
Has anybody on the South Coast of WA seen the FC in action??? It would have been a beast when finished.

Maybe I just run a 383 chev purely on Gas?? The V6 chev is also bigger than the standard Landy 8..... Hmmmmm which way to go.
Maybe I should do a poll on my options....lol. Let the masses decide ;)

What about the Isuzu designed and built Duramax V8?? The replacement for the 6.5.
The choice is probably the version 2 LLY or the higher output LBZ that GMC fit to Silverado HD and Kodiak HD.
These generally will bolt straight up to a 4L80E trannie for the 250BHP detuned engines, but IIRC, Allison autos are the std.
I know Greg at Brunswick bought a Duramax across with the view to putting it into an 80 Series Cruiser but had trouble fitting it under due to height. The ironic thing is that a 6.5 under the bonnet of an 80 Series sits waaaaaaay down inside, almost enough that you need abseiling gear when you lean over the bonnet to get to it!!!
If only Landrover put a bit more effort into "Project Alpine" we would all be driving V8 diesels.....
Now all someone has to do is work out how to strap another 3 cylinders to a TD5 and bend one across to the other side.....
Cheers
Andrew.

I know of a person who installed a chev into a 130 Defender, had more trouble than you could poke a stick at and eventually gave up and sold it, cost him a fortune

Early for me to respond with facts.
I will though when I am ready, want to test the vehicle proper.
No heard off etc.

Years ago I was intending to fit a 6.5 chevy diesel into my bushie (hence my user name). I did a lot of research, joined and pored over several chevy diesel forums, etc.
I only pulled out of a deal a day or 2 before I was going to lay down my $$$.
Until then I had been thinking all of the problems those engines have (and they have many), would be made up for by the performance (and I like to be different). Then common sense prevailed and I bought an Isuzu 4BD1T for much less $$$. With tweaks, the Isuzu will outperform the 6.5, be much, much more reliable and more economical.
The same Isuzu has been removed from my bushie and is going in my rangie. This is to be my vehicle for many extended trips, often towing a boat, for the rest of my driving life.

Never mind another 3 cylinder, it would make more sense with another 5

I have a bloke here wanting me to put a Chevy 6.5 into a early HJ 75 cruiser:eek: Its a 2H Jobie atm. He is towing a huge six horse goose neck with it. :o
I think for this one a 12HT will be as reliable as he will get. Be a little wanting on the hills but OK on the flat going.:)
All the Chev V8 diesels in my area have been a disaster so far:( Bad on fuel/Not that powerful/bloody over heat/. Most have plucked them out and used a Turboed Japper.
I must say they do sound good though:D

O.K. so far we hate the Chev diesel, the other simple options are 4.6l V6 Chev, 350 Chev or a fool injected 308???

From those three the Holden engine would win hands down. I wonder how much grunt do you need, a stroked Rover power plant would be heaps easier, pick a number almost.

Just thinking about choices of plants, for all I know this could just need the heads machining. However if it is to be a full rebuild I can get the other engines cheap & an adaptor kit for $700. Just seemed to a viable alternative.

And a lifetime of dramas. Add power and driveline failures will surely follow, negating any initial savings. Does your engine still run?

I pick the Disco up on friday arv. Needs head gaskets, 2nd set it has blown, so I have no idea what the engine will be any good. Was thinking a stock V8 holden engine would be o.k. without being excessive on the drivelines.
The other hand is I would like a deisel but have no idea how hard the change would be from petty to diseaseal. Has been good info from all so far & quite helpful.

Do you mean Project Iceberg?

No amount of effort was going to make it work. You can get great petrol engines from motors designed to be diesel as well (2.25 LR & Mk I Golf 1.6) but not the other way around.
