View Full Version : Family of angry chipmonks in dash

I seem to have a family of angry chipmonks living in the dash. It would appear to be directly in front of me. It happens on virtually any road with any form of bump in it, and they are quite loud  This is not something that strikes occasionally on a dirt road, but something that happens consistently around town.

I've pushed various areas of the dash and have been unable to stop it. Does anyone have any ideas before I pull the dash apart of common causes of chipmonks? Please? :)

If they're chipmonks they should be celibate chipmunks!

Try a can of silicon spray get under the dash and squirt annthing that looks like it might rub move or squeek. I get mine from spotlight it comes with a long thin tube to get into tight spots.

Fixed simular in the past and the good thing is it is not as messy as CRC etc.

Andrew - that's a good idea. I've got some of that. I'll just have to remove some bits to get a bit of coverage in there.

@Ron... gees.. no wonder they are so noisy. Those Chipmonks look very scary.

I guess I must have been in a rush as safari is dutifully telling me I can't spell..

Chipmonks don't sound too bad. I have mice in mine and the noise they make is too high pitched to accurately tell where it's coming from :(.

Instead of silicon you could try a teflon spray which will dry and not collect dust etc.
Haven't had to kill chipmunks with it but we used to use it when I was sailing small dinghies as it lubricated really well but didn't attract sand/dust.

Bunnings has it - pretty sure its a Selleys product - Ezyglide ??? or something like that.

Check and lube the bonnet hinge bushes before you pull the dash out!.

They have appeared to move into mine the same day I had my snorkel fitted. Any percieved flexing in the vehicle and they squeal like crazy. A noise that was absent before.

Ooooh I like both of those ideas. :D

If I hadn't had a small amount of "fruit based muscle relaxant" I'd jump in the car with my can of silicone right now. It will have to wait until tomorrow night now.

Agree with that - My bonnet hinges drove me crazy before I realised where the noise was coming from (would have sworn it was in the dash).

And those with Pumas - I bet the chipmunks move in later, after all it's still a Land Rover. Although unlike the earlier models (and the cat story) the doors may need to be open for them to get in. :D:D:D

Don't bet on it... A trip to the dealers can put a squeak into anything.

As well as a lube on those hinge blocks I have loosened off the hinge fixings on the bonnet and skewed the mount slightly, this puts a small amount of pressure on the hinge block and so far has silenced the (very irritating) squeak,;)

Cheers,
Paul.

Well I sprayed silicone on the bonnet catches last night and went for a short drive. The noise was still there afterwards though. I think there is still some more work I can do on this in the light though.

I sometimes get a squeaking noise from behind the steering wheel. This goes away if I put downard or upward force on the steering wheel, so I suspect it's got something to do with the steering mechnism rubbing on something.

Still haven't fixed it though, so no help there...

Thank you all! A packet of new bonnet bushes from MR ($5), which I wrapped in tape to pad them a little, sprayed with silicone... and then silence!!!

To the mods... If other people have a similar experience then I think this is one for a defender FAQ.

After a week of solid use I'm prepared to declare that the chipmonks are exorcised! :)
