hey dudes

a friend of a friend has a D60 for sale. it comes with a twin lense kit and i'm guessing a bag, not sure what else.

what do i look for in a second hand camera, scratches and bumps will be a good indicator of how they treated it, number of shots? battery life?

the lady is asking $600, i have had a quick look on the net and there are some second hands one around the $700 mark

Typically the twin lense kits don't tend to have the best quality lenses in them. This tends to govern the quality of the images.
How much is an equivalent package new? I wouldn't think you'd want to be paying much more than 60%??

so whats my options for a camera around the $500 to $600 mark as this is my limit $$$$wise

from what i can see on the net you can still buy a D60 new, in aus around $1000 and imported $700

I had a D40 prior to my D90, only reason for the replacement was loosing the D40. I was happy with my D40 as I didnt see the need at the time to spend extra money. Took some really slick pics that print to A4 size with no problems at all. Have a read of this link on the D40, The D 60 supercedes the D40 I think. Nikon D40 (http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm). There are not as many lenses available for Nikon up to D90 I believe but with the D60 in the first link and later on buy another bigger zoom I believe you will end up with a neat little camera.

You may need to walk another 200m to get a shot.
I believe the warranty is good, I purchased my d90 from here and will use them to replace my vidio camera in the next couple of weeks and then again in jan for a new zoom lense.

The reason I wouldn't pay that is I think the price is high for a second hand unit.....the D60 is ok if you just want to take snaps and not adjust to much or bracket etc etc....(therefore this camera doesn't suit me)
but also I would be looking at a grey import especially as we are so strong against the US dollar and get something like an 80 or a 90 the 80 isn't produced any more but you we still be able to get a good price on them. I put a link up not that long ago for greys online D90's were going for just under 400bux and they had D80's on there for under 3.....yes its an auction site but they had like 12 on there.
that my only reason I feel for a little bit extra more you could get a far superior camera that's new.

Looking at eBay etc the price doesn't look to bad, but...
For $950 you can get a new D3000 (basically replaces D60) with 18-55 & 55-200 new kit lenses and that's not a grey import price either.
As for what to look for.
Dust bunnies or other issues on the sensor. Take a picture and download it and look for anomalies.
Marks and fungus on the lenses.
Is the battery on the way out?
Shutter life (D60 is good for about 20,000 shots). The shot count information is embedded in the EXIF data of a picture.
D60 is a good camera, basic, but very good. I know several people with them and all are very happy.
Personally I'd be looking at the D90 but it is a much more expensive camera and significantly better.

just to give you some idea...most of these are fron the states...however if your buying second hand then this shouldn't be a problem...a lot i have posted are only bodies...bar one I think however lenses are easy to get cheap if your happy with the kit lense

May be just me
Been caught before buying second hand and thats been locally, heaven forbid if the item come from the states on how you would deal with it. For my money I would much rather have a new camera with warrenty than a better featured second hand one. I have got some second hand lenses off ebay (got them cheap) and have been lucky but for a body I would never buy second hand.
Different folks have different ideas I suppose and you will need to do what is right for you. Not having a shot at you DB (respect your opinions), I just think a bit different.

thats fair enough BB
only going on the theory if you buy second hand you have no come back either.
some of the ones I posted above are new! but I wouldn't know if they had warranty even there new price is down from the second hand quoted price weeds has had.
To be honest though weeds if the price suits YOU and you like the look and feel of the camera thats all that matters really..
like I said early I only said I wouldn't

Entry level the Pentax K-x is the best. You will not find a better camera for the price, plenty of reviews out there. Pentax K-x DSLR Camera (http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/category1019_1.htm)

Have you got one out of an old camera you could use for today? You can pick those up anywhere these days.

Kelvin, spend the extra money and get the fastest card you can afford. The time the camera will take to write a hi res pic to an ordinary card will drive you mad. I changed the card in my camera to a Sandisk extreme III and cut the writing time for a RAW pic from 20+ seconds to <4!

Some cameras have inbuilt memory where the photo is written to first, and then copied to the flash card to improve performance. I'm not sure if this is one of them. :)

The D60 will store about 9 RAW frames in the buffer, once that's full the card speed will become a factor.

Ok, so the speed of the SD card shouldn't really be critical then.
It's not very often that you need to take more than a 9 shot burst of photos.

I was shooting last weekend and took about 300 shots using 9fps, works well but I had to go back to just JPEG as shooting RAW would fill the buffer up - 48 shots RAW vs 130 JPEG. If you really want to "catch the moment", then a high frame rate sometimes helps.
I would still get at least an Extreme III level card for the D60. Definitely steer clear of the really slow ones, but there is no point spending the extra dollars for the latest and greatest either.
