I know a few of you import parts from overseas. What is the max value of stuff before import duty applies. If I go over and have to pay duty, what is the rate at which I will be charged? Thanks, Jim.

Pretty sure if the value exceeds A$1000, which includes, freight/postage,any insurances and GST (if applicable), you will then be up for customs duty. I don't think GST comes in until you are over A$1000 as well.

I'm assuming you are talking about a 'casual' import not as a business.

Do a quick hunt on Customs home page (http://replic.customs.gov.au/site/page.cfm)
although this may have what you need Customs procedures for importing and exporting (http://replic.customs.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=4226)

Personal imports, not commercial, A$1000 invoice value. Safest to get sent via post, not commercial freighter, also cheaper. Post delivers to your door, aand no involvement with Customns or agents. If importing from the USA and your consignment is maximum 20lbs. weight or can be split into parcels of 20lbs. or less then use US Postal Service flat rate boxes. Check their web site.
