Gday

I went to check my gearbox oil today and found it needs a wierd shaped tool to get onto it :(

Can anyone tell me what it is so I can get myself one? Or post a pic, I couldn't get a good look from under the Landy

Thanks

torqz bit T55.

you can get away with a large allen key (8 or 10mm from memory) but if it slips the first time Go no further.

I picked up a 3/3" drive 55torx from Total tools a couple of days ago, about $12.
Also if you haven't got one invest in a Tomthumb 1 litre hand pump, they're cheap and make life easy refilling gear box and transfer case oils.

As Dave said T55 drive. Kinchrome and others do a set of 1/4-3/8 drive sets and also you can get the as individual keys. Gearbox is easiest with the 3/8" drive on a ratchet.

Not sure if it applies Oz wide, but Repco in Perth is currently clearing their tools to get in a new brand.

I picked up a Torx bit with socket attachment for $2 with a lifetime warranty. :o

Throw away the standard filler plug as no one carries the correct Torx tool to fit it in the bush.
The thread in the gearbox is a standard BSP thread.
Go to the local plumbing or hardward shop and buy a pipe blanking plug fitting.
I use a brass item and it is a easy shifting spanner job to remove the plug now.
I think the thread was something like 1/2 BSP and the brass plug I used was BSP tapered thread.
Get some extras and fit in the thermostat housing and radiator to replace those silly plastic things which split and break.
Cost of brass fitting is about $4 each

I do:p

I'll second the Tom Thumb pump bottles. Makes it a lot easier.:)

They are very slow though.
Changed the oil in 4 diff's a gearbox and two transfer cases in one afternoon... then wondered "why is my arm so sore?"

Yeah, they are a little slow and I wish they had a 2L bottle but on the plus side they are small and light and you can work them whilst lying on a creeper under the Defender.

I use a big syringe thing which holds about 3/4of a litre or so. Really quick to fill and empty. Has about a foot of flexy hose on the end.

Try Repco, AutoBarn etc usually get them off an auto parts place. Car Parts NT in Katherine sell them, but that probably doesn't help many people.

I buy my oil in 20 litre drums and use a pump on the drum - real easy, simply place filler nozzle in filler hole and pump until it overflows.

For years I fiddled around with filling (and refilling numerous times) little oil bottles or syringe pumps before I bought the 20 litre drum pump at the Orange Field Day. Best move ever as far as oil changes go.

They are very slow though.
But cheaper than a AB DOER for a workout. Keep fit whilst servicing:D

You can readily buy a pump that screws onto a standard oil bottle. All use standard sizes of Bottle Closure Thread
