I thought you guys might get a kick out of my GPS set up. I am using an older Magellan Sport Trak GPS unit serially connected to an older Fujitsu touch screen Tablet PC. This pc is running windows 98 and doesn't have usb drivers to use modern USB devices. The advantage of this unit is that I can manipulate my full resolution maps and apps with a wand and the touch screen while out on the trail. I have an IR keyboard and mouse but I rarely need them. I put the device into log mode and it plots my active track from the gps and moves the map as I move across the display. I will eventually have to break down an get a net book. When I do I will use a better GPS unit and equip the netbook with a solid state hard drive so the only move parts on the system will be the keyboard keys! When and if I ever lose the GPS system out on the trail I can use my trusty console mounted marine compass and a map! Although I keep a modern hand held magellan in the truck as a back up to my back up.
