I thought the aussie defenders didn't have a speed restrictor?

I found it when i was overtaking a truck and car with caravan yesterday on a rural road (110km/h), kicks in at between 135-140 km/h

For a start I'm amazed you can do over 110 with a caravan:p
If you don't mind me saying 135 is plenty any way in a large fridge. I'm more concerned about pulling power than top speed these days.:) Would it be torque limited with wind resistance etc at that rate of knots?

Hi,
I wonder where/what is the trigger?
Is it affected by gear/tyresize?
cheers

Apparantly the Puma is speed restricted depending on which country it is setup for.
The dealer is meant to set it up when they get it, so maybe yours is still set to the UK which is limited to 82mph (~131kmh (your speedo probably over-reads)).
It is only a software limit, so can be removed easily by a dealer or someone with the computer connection/software.
Throwing a chip in normally removes the limiter as well. :D

Hey Guys,

What sort of top speed do you all get from your Australian spec Puma's.

135k's is all that I get. I always thought it was a speed limiter.

Should I have the dealer lift it to Australia standard, what ever that is ??

Cheers

I haven't encountered it on mine - haven't gone that fast - but it is set at 137kph or 85mph from what I've been told. MLR informed me it was set on mine.
I understand it can also be removed from the vehicle map.

african ones can wind to the govenor or till they run out of grunt.
some UK ones were limited.

My speed restrictor is usually occupying the passenger seat and can't be disabled only ignored

I have one of those too....can easily be bypassed with two standard drinks with lunch - and a pillow. :lol2:

Neither do I and I also can't understand why they enforced a 130kph speed limit in the NT when I've driven the Tdi on the highway.
I haven't had the Puma on the open highway without the Kamper behind it and when towing I try not to go over 100kph.

I have had the Puma up to 140 in northern territory and i'm positive it would of pulled on it wasn't intentional...was doing 130 and didn't realise I was creeping up

No UK td5s were speed limited atall to my knowledge.

I thought all Puma's had it as a factory set limit, and I recall people lke Pete at BAS spent a while being able to bypass it

Mate - I'm with Sleepy! I'd fit a speed restricter like yours in a flash - who would ignore "it"? :D

I thought some of the early D2's had a speed limiter in them as I had a couple of queries while I was in townsville about why they couldnt clear 150kph indicated and then after chipping they could, no it wasnt that the engine had run out of puff, that was my first reaction.

Yeh Mate I agree 100Kph is the maximum speed anywhere in Australia for towing .Cheers,

I've had mine to about 143kph but the GPS said 137kph which I believe over the Speedo.
Oh and Dfendr, Love that avitar, I think if she told me to slow down, I am not sure I could!! :p

I think the caravan was being overtaken by him, not towed by him.

Haven't have mine over 125, but that seemed plenty fast enough to me. Can't imagine how noisy 140 would be

Since when? I was under the impression that WA was the only state that had a towing speed limit in place.

I quite happily tow my tandem trailer behind my RRC at 110 kph where that is the speed limit. I have done so in the NT, SA and Vic.

Check out all state limits The limit that applies to trucks and buses applies to towing too.At one time NSW was 90 but the limits were standardised Oz wide

Bit off topic about Puma speed restrictors, but here is a link to speed limits when towing in Australia: Towing Guide (http://www.towingguide.com.au/legal.html) :D
Read the whole page, explains it quite nicely and appears current as of 2008.
I love the way they standardised it across Australia, but good old WA said nah! :p (computer says No )

In which case, after reading that, Puma's owner's Handbook states a maximum towing speed of 80kph and so that's what you should be doing except in WA you can do 100kph when towing.
After 3 months towing a trailer I can say I found the best speed to be around the 80-90 kph in 5th unless it was long and flat then you could just cruise in 6th at 100 kph.

Bit of grave digging...
My 2010 110 had the speed limiter which if you got a decent downhill run it would violently jerk the car trying to keep the speed around the 137km/h mark however my new 2013 130 has no limiter from what I can gather....so does anyone else have a puma WITHOUT a remap that does not seem to have the limiter ?

Could you feel the computer start holding the motor back by cutting in and out ? Or was it still smooth and could have kept going if there was enough road ?

No power surges that I could feel, and I have hit a speed limiter before and know what it feels like.
Could have easily gone further :)
