Registering dinghy?

Hi boaties,

What's the deal with owning a small aluminum dinghy in Aussie? Do they need to be registered or similar? How does it work?

I've been looking at a few on eBay to get a feel for pricing for when we do our big Aussie trip and some reference "registration" and have big numbers painted on the front of the hull.

There's nothing like that here in NZ for small boats so forgive me if it's a dumb question in Aussie.

In Queensland If it's under 4hp no rego, over 4hp requires rego.

Under 6hp no license, over 6hp license require.

In the Northern Territory I believe small boats are not required to be registered.

If you plan to use it anywhere other than th NT I would suggest having it registered in 1 of the other states.

Also be aware that boat regos in QLD do not include CTP. So I would strongly suggest getting insurance cover.

Rego & Licensing?? :rulez: Are you saying drivers need to be licensed as well? :confused:

Are they both a case of just "fill in the form and pay your money" or are tests involved?

AFAIK:

In WA, any boat with a motor or which can be fitted with a motor must be "licensed" (registered).

Anyone operating a powered boat must have an RST (recreational skippers ticket) - or there must be at least 1 person with an RST in the boat at all times. To obtain an RST you need to complete a written and practical test. Fees vary, as they are run by various private companies.

I am not sure what the rules are for people who are only visiting WA, however I know that interstate boat licences are accepted instead of the RST.

I spoke to the enforcers at the boat show.
For WA
Over 4 HP you need a RST.
All need registering.
Can be used as a tender for a launch/yaught no rego neded must display mother ships rego numbers.
